Ingmar Bergman (1918- 2007) made fifty films, directed more than 150 theatre productions and wrote several books, but the recurrent thread running through his life was music. He often said that if he hadn't become a director he would have wished to become a conductor, and went so far as to claim that ‘film and music are almost the same thing. They are means of expression and communication that go beyond human wisdom and that touch a person’s emotional centre.’ Bergman’s interest in classical music became evident early on in his career. Music in Darkness (1948) is about a pianist who loses his sight in a shooting accident, To Joy (1950) features a violinist who dreams of a solo career and Summer Interlude (1951) takes place at the Royal Swedish Opera.

Singer Marie Bergman may appear to be middle-aged in her photos, but she has a surprisingly youthful voice. Her versatility is quite impressive, and nearly all of the 15 songs she performs on this release from the Danish Stunt label are memorable. After starting off with a rapid and brief rendition of Harold Arlen's "Down With Love," she does a complete left turn, soulfully digging into Irma Thomas' R&B-ish "Wish Someone Would Care." She covers a great deal of territory throughout the continually intriguing set, including "Crazy He Calls Me," "Comes Love," John Coltrane's "Naima" (which has Jon Hendricks lyrics), "Them There Eyes," "Cry Me a River" and "Just One of Those Things." The arrangements are colorful; the European musicians (which include keyboardist Peter Nordahl and, on a few cuts apiece, trumpeter Ann Sofi Soderqvist and baritonist Gunnar Bergsten) are excellent; plus, organist Jimmy McGriff makes a guest appearance on "Let Me Be the First to Know." This release is well worth searching for.

Apart' is an album of separation and redefinition, of entering darkness to find the light. It's about a difficult, yet positive choice made by the artist to set herself 'apart' from her culture, country and personal relationships and gain redefining perspective. "I hope this record inspires others to have the courage to let go of destructive patterns or relationships and stand apart - strong and full of self-love." The titular track opens with a haunting Hammond organ, harmonic dissonance and a heavy guitar riff, before Bergman's luscious and emotionally charged vocals take over.

Erik Valdemar Bergman (1911-2006) was an influential composer of classical music from Finland. Bergman's style ranged widely, from Romanticism in his early works (many of which he later prohibited from being performed) to modernism and primitivism, among other genres. He won the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1994 for his opera Det sjungande trädet. Bergman studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and afterwards with Heinz Tiessen in Berlin and with Wladimir Vogel in Ascona. Since 1963 he taught composition at the Sibelius Academy, besides working until 1978 as a choir conductor. Bergman is considered a pioneer of modern music in Finland. Because of his training he was considered as a representative of the avant-garde; he developed for example the twelve-tone techniques of Arnold Schönberg learned from Wladimir Vogel. He composed song cycles, cantatas, pieces for piano and for organ, a guitar suite, a chamber concert for flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, percussion and piano and further chamber works.

In his later years often described as the grand old man of Finnish modernism, Erik Bergman (1911-2006) was among the first in Finland to use compositional methods such as twelve-tone technique, serial music, choral Sprechgesang and aleatory counterpoint. His specialty was choral music, and a large part of his huge production involves a choir in some form. This recording focuses primarily on his works for mixed choir that have not appeared on disc before, and gives a broad picture of his production for the medium over a period of more than 60 years.
