Magdalena Kožená, Sir Simon Rattle, and the Berliner Philharmoniker seduce in Ravel’s Shéhérazade, stir and awe in Dvorák’s austere Biblische Lieder, and render to the fullest the bittersweet potency of Mahler’s intricately orchestrated Rückert Lieder.

The fact that the Berliner Lautten Compagney Berlin and their director Wolfgang Katschner "repeatedly produce ingenious crossover albums" has already become a "hallmark of the ensemble".

Historically informed performance practice on modern instruments – that was the concept which brought musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker and leading representatives of the early music scene together to form the Berlin Baroque Soloists in 1995.

The Berlin vocal ensemble sirventes berlin and its director Stefan Schuck present a real Berlin Christmas album: Berlin composers from the 19th to 21st centuries are collected here on one release, from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Carl Thiel, Albert Becker, Peter Cornelius and Heinrich von Herzogenberg to the contemporary composer Frank Schwemmer. In addition to such famous works as “Frohlocket, ihr Völker” by Mendelssohn, numerous unknown treasures have been rediscovered. Stefan Schuck founded the vocal ensemble sirventes berlin in 2003 to perform the world premiere of the a cappella cantata “that they may life” by the Jewish composer Josef Dorfman as part of the Ecumenical Kirchentag in Berlin. Since 2008 the ensemble works regularly for the NoonSong. The outstanding quality of the ensemble is a testament to their intense and hard work.

Karajan was unquestionably a great Tchaikovsky conductor. Yet although he recorded the last three symphonies many times, he did not turn to the first three until the end of the 1970s, and then proved an outstanding advocate. In the Mendelssohnian opening movement of the First, the tempo may be brisk, but the music's full charm is displayed and the melancholy of the Andante is touchingly caught.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt once said, “Schubert is the composer who is closest to my heart” – and in this edition, Harnoncourt and the Berliner Philharmoniker present a brilliant and multifaceted portrait of the composer. It of course includes Schubert’s symphonies – from the too little-known early works to the “Unfinished” and the “Great” C major Symphony. With Schubert’s final two masses, central works of Romantic sacred music are also represented, plus there is a first-class discovery with the opera Alfonso und Estrella.

A joyful celebration welcoming the New Year, this Gala from Berlin presents the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, in Carl Orff’s famous Carmina Burana, an intensely dramatic cantata that remains one of the most widely performed works from the twentieth century. With an exceptional vocal line-up – soprano Sally Matthews, tenor Lawrence Brownlee and baritone Christian Gerhaher. Featuring the Rundfunchor Berlin with Chorus Master Simon Halesey as well as the Knabenchor des Staats- und Domchores Berlin. Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is one of the most popular and exiting classical works. Christian Gerhaher had received his second Echo-Klassik in the year of the recording of this performance.

Here is some of the most spiritually uplifting music of our generation, sung by that most virtuosic of choirs, Polyphony. Arvo Pärt (paralleled in England by John Tavener) has succeeded in capturing the attention of a broad public through his consummate ability to weave a sense of inevitable power into music of fundamental simplicity. The impressive Berlin Mass which opens the disc was written in 1990, the Credo being a fascinating major-key reworking of the earlier minor-mode Summa; very much an expression of joy at the lifting of the Soviet embargo on ‘sacred’ music in Estonia. Annum per Annum is a monumental work for solo organ and is here performed on the organ of St Paul’s Cathedral: a thoroughly exhilarating experience. The disc ends with the masterpiece De profundis. This most powerful of texts draws from Pärt an inexorable momentum from a beginning almost out of nothing to a devastating climax.
