In early June 2023, Daniel Barenboim conducted this French program in the Berlin Philharmonie; it was a concert that inspired the present recording for DG. In 2024 we celebrate the great French composer Gabriel Fauré 100 years after he died with this recording of the incidental music for ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’. Almost 50 years after his first DG recording of Franck's symphony with the Orchestre de Paris

Even more “impressive” than her powerful playing are “the quiet passages when Marie-Pierre Langlamet elicits a song from her 47 strings that is so atmospheric, and has such subtle dynamic shadings that you would never expect from this plucked string instrument”, according to Der Tagesspiegel. Since 1993, the musician has played as principal harp in the ranks of the Berliner Philharmoniker, frequently taking her place in front of the orchestra as a soloist.

“It can be asserted without hesitation that every member of a first-class orchestra deserves to be called an ‘artist’,” Arthur Nikisch once wrote. With this credo, the chief conductor of what at that time was called the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester played an important role in allowing the musicians to conceive of themselves as soloists — something that remains one of the unmistakable qualities of the Berliner Philharmoniker to this day.

When in December 1812 the French violinist Pierre Rode (1774–1830) first visited Vienna, Beethoven wrote a work for Rode’s appearance before the “Associated Cavaliers” in the Palais Lobkowitz, his Violin Sonata op. 96, which received its premiere with Archduke Rudolph at the clavier: Beethoven, lover of humanity and advocate of peace among all nations, chose to stay at home and sulk, presumably so as not to have to offer his hand to a famous colleague. In the Great Hall of the Redoute, in which the public debut took place a little later, Rode for his part played works of his own.

Astor Piazzolla, the great Argentine composer and bandoneon player, was born exactly a century ago in 1921. Fascinated by the music of Bach, Mozart and Chopin, Piazzolla wanted to compose great classical music. From Alberto Ginastera he received lessons in orchestration, composition and conducting, as well as in literature and poetry. Following his studies with Ginastera, Piazzolla received a scholarship to study in Paris with the renowned pianist and composer Nadia Boulanger. Under her guidance, he began to conceive of and perfect his own style of composition.
