Between the Buried and Me's forward-thinking musical agenda was already well established by the release of third album, Alaska (their second for Victory Records), but it's questionable whether their complex creative vision had yet coalesced in such stunningly satisfying fashion. Come to think of it, there is no argument. Perhaps it was the frustratingly continuous membership turnover that marred those past near-misses, because although there was no telling as of yet that the quintet responsible for Alaska would in fact go on to embody BTBAM's definitive lineup, in retrospect, it's quite obvious why they meshed here, and then stuck together.

A new Between the Buried and Me album means a new locomotive, and this time the hype-train is chugging along faster than ever. For most fans of the band, Colors was a landmark release. Alaska was, in a lot of ways, just another take on The Silent Circus. A shittier one, at that. But Colors brought something new. Not only did it finally make full use of one-time session musicians Blake, Dan and Dustie, but it pushed the band further into their earlier hinted progressive tendencies.

In the year 2005, Between the Buried and Me released their third full-length album Alaska. It hit the market like a tidal wave, gaining praise from media and consumer alike. The appeal of the album was its intricacies and tempo changes. It moved between time signatures and musical styles like a 10-year-old with ADD while simultaneously showcasing a knack for writing the technical metal showcased on their earlier full-lengths. Following up such a successful album is no easy task, but BTBAM stepped up to the task and (discounting 2006's cover album The Anatomy Of… ) delivered Colors.

Between the Buried and Me's 2007 album, Colors, marked a departure for the band from the expansive technical death metal of its earlier career into more progressive rock-influenced territory. Released in 2009, The Great Misdirect refined BTBAM's new approach, and their split from Victory Records that year afforded them the freedom to further push the limits of progressive death metal. The companion piece to last year's The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues, The Parallax II: Future Sequence is the slickest and best-paced of their latter-era releases – and at over 70 minutes in length, the sugary-sweet choruses and serene jazz-rock interludes are necessary to break up the relentless energy of tracks like "Astral Body."

Vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter Tommy Giles Rogers, Jr., aka Thomas Giles, is a heavy metal and electronic-based artist best known for his work with the metalcore band Between the Buried and Me. Born in Morganton, North Carolina in 1980, Giles first came to prominence as a member of the progressive metal band Prayer for Cleansing, with which he performed from 1999 to 2000. After that band broke up, Giles formed Between the Buried and Me, whose albums have included the group's eponymous 2002 debut, 2003's The Silent Circus, 2005's Alaska, 2006's The Anatomy Of, 2007's Colors, 2009's The Great Misdirect, and 2012's The Parallax II: Future Sequence. Away from Between the Buried and Me, Giles has also worked on several side projects including the electronic-based Giles and the duo Jacob Rogers with musician Jacob Troth. In 2011 Giles released his debut solo album, Pulse, on Metal Blade. Three years later, he returned with his sophomore solo studio album, Modern Noise.
