John Lindberg's recordings as a leader are characterized by complex, creative arrangements, and this is no exception. Captured after a grueling European tour, the all-star quartet assembled by the bassist focuses on slow, sometimes brooding or repetitive, but more often than not intellectually stimulating, lines that swirl with low pressure intensity. Lindberg, of course, is featured throughout as a soloist, and trumpeter Leo Smith, who has rarely sounded more compelling, also plays extensively to good effect.
