A spin-off band from Bill Haley & the Comets, the Jodimars unsurprisingly sounded much like Haley on their singles for Capitol Records. Along with Haley, Boyd Bennett, and Freddie Bell, they epitomized a certain strain of northern rock & roll, caught between rockabilly and big-band jump and swing, playing material derived from rhythm & blues without much soulfulness in the vocals.

Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock and roll band that was founded in 1952 and continued until Haley's death in 1981. The band, also known by the names Bill Haley and The Comets and Bill Haley's Comets (and variations thereof), was the earliest group of white musicians to bring rock and roll to the attention of white America and the rest of the world. From late 1954 to late 1956, the group placed nine singles in the Top 20, one of those a number one and three more in the Top Ten. Bandleader Bill Haley had previously been a country music performer; after recording a country and western-styled version of "Rocket 88", a rhythm and blues song, he changed musical direction to a new sound which came to be called rock and roll.

This is a collector's dream. All of Bill's American recordings of the 60s are here, and a lot of unreleased stuff too, recorded with after his departure at U.S. Decca Records. In a general sense, the music on the six CD's changes progressively from the first one until the last because Haley tries diferent kinds of styles and all this is obvious because the decade starts with some 50's influence and ends with the "Rock and Roll Revivals". Although he didn't reach the charts any more, his musical output was enormous and differed from good old Rock'n'Roll, Twist and Country & Western even to a Mariachi song.

The rating of this six-CD set is no joke - yes, Bill Haley was supposed to be an irrelevant artist during the 1960s, but he did, in fact, generate well over 100 good and far-better-than-decent sides that are contained in this set. No, there's nothing remotely as earth-shattering or important as his best work for Decca from 1954-1955, and even most hardcore fans of that material may find the cost of this set difficult to justify; but take it from someone who shelled out for this box, it's worth a LOT more than you'd ever guess without hearing it - Haley and his band still knew how to work a song, as demonstrated several dozen times on this set. The title is actually a bit misleading, since the sides that Haley recorded for Warner Bros. Records amount to less than a third of the contents of this box…

Any casual listener looking over this 132-track five-CD set would probably conclude that it was far more Bill Haley than they need bite off in one gulp - and they'd be right, as casual listeners. For the serious rock & roll enthusiast, as well as the hardcore Bill Haley fan, however, there's a wealth of worthwhile material to be found here, some of which will amaze even those fans: a dozen great songs and 55 or so more that are good, and another 20 that are fascinating mistakes, and that's a good average for an artist who is generally thought of as having generated just a handful of important records. What Haley had most of all was a distinctive sound - between the backbeat, the country boogie roots, and the R&B sources - that pretty much defined white rock & roll for almost its first two years (until Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins emerged in the spring of 1956); the first two CDs here offer that sound in abundance…

Rock 'N' Roll begins here. This set includes everything that Bill Haley recorded for Decca between 1954 and 1960, and again in 1964. All the hits, all the misses, all the album tracks, even two previously unissued demos from 1958. There's also a complete CD of out-takes. A total of 132 tracks including all the original Decca singles, all the LP tracks, and, of course, 'Rock Around The Clock'.

„The other live album from Haley's December 16, 1969 appearance at the Bitter End is actually better in some respects than the 1950's Rock 'n Roll Revival. Much of this set was drawn from Haley's second and third shows that day, on which he and the band were obviously feeling even more confident after a very successful first show, for what was to be his first official live album in eight years. The group lacks the cutting edge of a Chuck Berry set of the same period, in which audiences heard uncensored renditions of his raunchier lyrics – Haley and company keep their lyrics and the between-song patter clean. On the other hand, they play the hell out of a number like 'Whole Lotta Shakin',' with Nick Masters turning in a bracing performance on lead guitar, bending a few notes and living up to the role of guitar hero.“ (Bruce Eder, AMG)

Bill Haley was the first boss of Rock'n' Roll. Bear Family presents with this compilation the music that has influenced Haley and - in addition - a cross-genre collection of the best cover versions of his classic songs. The CD album covers two decades with recordings from 1938 - 1959! Sound influences of the early years. When Haley along with his Saddlemen turned to Boogie themes and R&B tracks during the late 1940s, Bill - coming from Western Swing - mixed the styles almost automatically and developed an early form of Rock 'n' Roll music.
