On May 27-31, 1985, a series of symposia was held at The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, to celebrate the 70th birthday of Pro­ fessor V. M. Joshi. These symposia were chosen to reflect Professor Joshi's research interests as well as areas of expertise in statistical science among faculty in the Departments ofStatistical and Actuarial Sciences, Economics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Philosophy. From these symposia, the six volumes which comprise the "Joshi Festschrift" have arisen. The 117 articles in this work reflect the broad interests and high quality of research of those who attended our conference.

This book aims not only to introduce fundamental biostatistics topics but to explain them through R-project (R-studio). 'R' is perhaps the more used statistical software in the medical field.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 13th International Meeting on Computational Intelligence Methods for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, CIBB 2016, held in Stirling, UK, in September 2016. The 19 revised full papers and 6 keynotes abstracts presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 61 submissions. The papers deal with the application of computational intelligence to open problems in bioinformatics, biostatistics, systems and synthetic biology, medicalinformatics, computational approaches to life sciences in general.
