To celebrate the 21st anniversary of their debut release, Blur s break-through album Parklife has now been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright (The Smiths, Arcade Fire, New Order, Joy Division), with the remastering overseen by legendary original producer, Stephen Street. The first of five No 1 albums for the band, the four times platinum selling Parklife transformed Blur into the biggest band in the country and the Parklife Special Edition certainly doesn t fall short of that status. The accompanying bonus disc begins by collecting together all b-sides from all formats of the Girls And Boys, To The End, Parklife and End Of A Century singles, which contain - among many lesser-known Blur tracks - a Pet Shop Boys remix of Girls And Boys, a rendition of To The End with Damon singing in French, Graham s take on Country and Western in Red Necks and a rare appearance of a track written by Alex on, Alex s Song. Also included are previously unreleased acoustic versions of Jubilee and Parklife recorded for a BBC Radio 1 session in 1994 and the previously unreleased Cadena 40 Principales Acoustic Version of End Of A Century, which featured on a Spanish-only promo for the single.

So here we are again.Three years after the 2009 reunion, and the obligatory Hyde Park DVD, we come again to 17 of the same songs (and 8 different ones), performed in the same field three years later. The stage may be slightly different, but nothing else seems to have changed.
But what is the point? If you're Damon Albarn sometimes his restless urge doesn't reflect experimentation as much as it does running away. As Albarn grows older, and inevitably richer, he seems to often forget the life people live in favour of abstract or meaningless. Here, tonights concentrated Blur shows that Damon needs someone to argue with him. Someone to tell him “No.” Much like Morrissey and Prince, Albarn needs something to fight against.

Recorded during Blur’s rapid rise in popularity and tabloid recognition, the third and final chapter in what was referred to as the band’s “life trilogy” sees the band present a dark and lavish look at the modern world, populated by night-shift cab drivers, factory workers, lottery players and swinging couples. Justly awarded five star reviews on release in 1995, the album features Blur’s first number 1 single, “Country House” and the beautiful “The Universal”.

It's ironic – but what isn't ironic, when it comes to Blur, the most ironic band in pop history – that the single that made Brit-pop a phenomenon had almost nothing to do with what followed, apart from maybe Pulp and the renegade band of freaks that Simon Price labeled as Romos. "Girls & Boys" was retro-new wave disco, a post-modern cross of Duran Duran and Chic.

A fan favorite, Blur’s 1993 sophomore album and critical breakthrough flew in the face of music created by their peers, and presented a pop encyclopedia of England to battle the influence of American grunge and the shoe-gazing, baggy affectations of their debut. Filled with melody, strings, brass and quintessential Englishness, the album’s modest success was followed by a successful UK tour, newly found respect evident in the end of year polls, and a strong indicator of where Blur were to go next.

British pop’s defining record of the 1990’s, "Parklife" became part of the national consciousness, English vocabulary and was the first of five consecutive number one albums for Blur. Produced by Stephen Street, the album continued the lyrical themes of its predecessor, but stylistically reaching further afield featuring torch song balladry, instrumental waltzes, disco and angular new wave. Parklife garnered Blur two top ten singles, four Brit Awards and Classic Album status.
