Ted Milton - poet, puppeteer and musician - once described himself as "a tone-deaf musician" and at the end of a sax-part during a Blurt gig in Antwerp he proclaimed with a broad smile: "Oh, why don't I just take some lessons?" All this to say Ted doesn't see himself as a groundbreaking nor virtuoso saxplayer. However, when in good form his instrument becomes an extension of his body and wonderful sonic landscapes enfold. Here he leads his experimental art rock trio Blurt on their first live album since 1989's "The Body Live!". Recorded live at Cafe Oto in January 2016

Even though Philly-based band the Writhing Squares is made up of just two people, they conjure enough layers of sonic sludge to sound not just like a large band on full power, but a wall of beautifully gnarled noise calling out from the depths of a black hole. Building on the clatter of decidedly primitive drum-machine rhythms, Daniel Provenzano's overdriven bass lines wobble and churn as his bandmate Kevin Nickles fills in any space with tentacular waves of saxophone, delay-drenched vocals and deep-fried electronics.

Maybe they didn’t hear, you think. You repeat your opening line again, this time in what you think is a louder voice. They continue their conversation as though you weren’t even there. Literally, you have failed to even enter into their consciousness as a being worthy of recognition. Without skipping a beat the girl you addressed turns her back to you and keeps talking to her friend, leaving you standing there with your dick in your hand.
