I’m so pleased to be reviewing this CD on International Women’s Day, as it’s an excellent example of what women can achieve with music. I was concerned when I read on the publicity sheet that the album was ‘for and to the sentient beings of our planet’, which sounded a bit pompous to my ears, but there is nothing pompous at all about the CD, which gives us fine jazz-influenced music and lyrics with an original, quirky and sometimes moving twist. For example, there are 2 songs about contemporary concerns: Dear Humans deals with climate change and the earth is speaking to us: ‘I’m as old as the hills/ and forever your mother/but your way of living kills/You need me, sisters and brothers/It seems that you don’t bother."

The finest country songwriters understand that the best way to a big idea is often through a small detail. Consider the central gesture that dictates the action in Brandy Clark's beautiful song "I Cried," which appears on producer Dave Cobb's graceful compilation album Southern Family. Contemplating a grandfather's death and his wife's ensuing loneliness, Clark builds the song's chorus around the phrase, "I cried," her voice arching up into a tender, transcendent falsetto; in the next line, she takes the mood down again. "I tried to hold my head high, it ended up in my hands." That simple image so effectively captures the experience of living with grief: the attempt to show strength for others, for your own sanity, and the gradual, quiet, repetitive sag into vulnerability. Who hasn't experienced this moment at a funeral — or, as Clark describes, while simply talking on the phone with a fellow loved one left behind?

Lightboxer is an instrumental band that rides the wave of Afro on a surfboard of improvisation. Tight grooves, irresistible melodies and a hint of cinematic ambience help fill the sails and set the course for the sunset. Behind this group of a distinctive sound and strong, almost visual moods we find two veritable labourers of the Finnish jazz scene; the Emma-awarded Markus Holkko and the guitarist Aki Haarala. The eponymous debut album was released in June 2012 by Texicalli Records.

Stan Getz was such a consistent performer and had such a beautiful tone that nearly all of his recordings are well worth getting. The two radio appearances heard on this 1997 CD are even on a higher level than normal. Joined by pianist Kenny Barron, either Ray Drummond or Yashuito Mori on bass, and drummer Ben Riley, Getz is heard at the peak of his powers on a pair of obscurities (Kenny Barron's "Feijada" and Gigi Gryce's "Stan's Blues") and six numbers (including "Voyage," "Blood Count" and "Warm Valley") that he recorded numerous times. To hear Getz adding even more beauty to Mal Waldron's already gorgeous "Soul Eyes" is a memorable experience.
