Boisdeffre’s main output period was between 1878 and 1888. In the first year of this period he composed the Marche religieuse op. 14 for orchestra, which was performed by the Concerts Colonne ensemble; two years later his Pastorale for orchestra was also performed. In the 80’s he received the Prix Chartier granted by the Académie des Beaux-Arts for his chamber works. Boisdeffre composed mostly chamber music (60 pieces of his work are from this genre). However the form and cast were very varied. The composer usually named them in an unconventional way. He also composed many songs, piano pieces, as well as chorales and religious works, amongst them the Messe de Notre Dame de Sion op. 47. Boisdeffre’s sonic language was traditional, resembling the romanticism of the first half of the XIXth century, especially that of Mendelssohn. The only critique of this composer by H. Imbert, defines the style of his songs as similar to the works of Gounod and Massenet, where as his instrumental work was compared to the music of Lalo and Saint-Saëns. The Sonata op. 50 confirms those comparisons. The lyrical values of Boisdeffre’s compositions do reflect a musical identity similar in style to that of French opera at that time.
