"The Austrian conductor Karl Böhm is one of the towering conductors of the 20th Century. As the embodiment of the long Austro-German musical tradition, he helped to write musical history. This 19-CD set assembles all the extant recordings he conducted for EMI (notably its German Electrola label) over the period 1935 to 1949 in Dresden, Berlin, Vienna and London includes a number of rarities and the world premiere release of a version of Mozart’s Serenata notturna recorded in Vienna in 1947. It was during these years that Böhm cemented his reputation as a major conductor of Austro-German repertoire. Collectors will also be pleased to know that this set contains all the recordings that featured in the now-iconic series of Dresden-themed LP boxes released by EMI to mark Böhm’s 85th birthday in 1979. Mozart composed some fifty symphonies, if we include works he adapted from opera overtures or serenades by adding movements or taking them away. The first dates from 1764-5, at the time of his childhood visit to London, and most are early works, quite short. Many are associated with his boyhood travels (his first trip to Italy in 1769-71, for instance) but his most prolific period as a symphonist was between 1771 and 1774 when, in Salzburg, he wrote no fewer than seventeen.

'Mein Beethoven' is the logical next step for Dieter Ilg. His last album 'Parsifal' – a chamber-jazz interpretation of Richard Wagner's sacred festival work, which Focus magazine called a 'highlight in the Richard Wagner Year 2013' – closed with a whispered theme from Beethoven's Ninth ('Ode to Joy'), retitled 'Sehnsucht' (Longing) by Ilg. Now he has satisfied that yearning and recorded an entire album, 'Mein Beethoven', dedicated to this Olympian of German classical music, the most classical of all our composers, the one-time 'superstar of the music capital Vienna': Ludwig van Beethoven.
