Bonnie Raitt, live from The Record Plant, Sausalito, CA 9th December 1973. American blues singer-songwriter, musician, and activist Bonnie Raitt recorded live at The Record Plant in Sausalito CA on December 9th 1973. Broadcast on KSAN 95 FM in San Francisco. At the time Bonnie had just released her 3rd studio album Takin' My Time during the summer that year. "For many years, I couldn't stand listening to my own voice, not enough gravitas or experience to convey the depth of emotion I wanted to express." A poignant confession of self-doubt revealed by the Cambridge blues great Bonnie Raitt to Rolling Stone magazine in later years. Although Raitt may have doubted her initial spiritual abilities, her power undeniably came from her own depth and determination. Her unique style is a salute to her heroes and heroines, namely the blues greats.

At the time of this concert Bonnie Raitt had been in the music business for twenty years. The album she was touring in support of, Nick Of Time (1989), was a comeback effort, produced by Don Was for her new label Capitol. After half a decade in the wilderness battling her bad habits and touring solo, she took the best possible revenge on the label who had dropped her (Warner Bros) by making a chart-topping, multi-platinum selling, Grammy-winning masterpiece. The blues-rock band she took on the road brought her new material and some old classics to life for enthusiastic audiences across the States. Performed at The Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium, Oakland, CA, 26 November 1989 for broadcast on KMPX-FM.

Since Bonnie Raitt didn't score any big hits during her nine-album tenure at Warner Bros., compiling a best-of from those records is largely a matter of taste, and after Raitt's commercial breakthrough on Capitol with Nick of Time in 1989, Warners decided to trust her own taste in choosing songs for this compilation. The artist's input is usually considered a good thing, but in this case it has resulted in an idiosyncratic selection that fails to be representative or to cull the real highlights from Raitt's Warners catalog. Basically, that catalog breaks down into three sections - the first three solid albums, the second three good but uneven albums, and the last three mediocre, compromised albums. Raitt has opted to try to find at least a couple of tracks from each album, which means she necessarily slights her best work in favor of her weakest…

Listening through Dig in Deep, Bonnie Raitt's 20th album, the entire arc of her career becomes clear. In the early '70s she insisted on recording live in the studio with her road band. Later, various producers – from Jerry Ragovoy to Peter Asher, from Don Was to T-Bone Burnett – assisted in shaping her sound, often with great commercial success: she's sold nearly 20 million records. She's learned from them all. There have been downs, but each was balanced by a rise. In 2012 she ended a seven-year silence with the poignant, powerful Slipstream, co-produced with Joe Henry and released on Redwing, her own label.
