Funk Soul

' When Brainstorm's second album, "Journey to the Light", failed to sell, some people reasoned that it was due to a shortage of up-tempo material. So with its third and final album, "Funky Entertainment", the Detroit band decided to go for maximum disco appeal and make up-tempo songs a top priority. While "Journey to the Light" was primarily an album for listening, "Funky Entertainment" is very dance-oriented. "Funky Entertainment" wasn't a big seller, but it did enjoy some exposure in dance clubs. At the same time, there were die-hard Brainstorm fans who felt that by neglecting ballads, slow jams, and quiet storm material, the Motor City residents were selling themselves short creatively. And, to be sure, "Funky Entertainment" is the least-essential and least-memorable of Brainstorm's three albums.' Review by Alex Henderson at AMG

Rufus Thomas' first album following Stax's break from the Atlantic had "Do the Funky Chicken" as its centerpiece, so the emphasis upon good-humored dance tunes was unsurprising. There were some weird moments, particularly the down-and-bestial seven-minute update of "Sixty Minute Man" (on which Rufus sounds like he's singing in tongues), a remake of "Bear Cat," and a two-part version of "Old McDonald Had a Farm." Still, the slightly goofy uptempo arrangements can get a little tiresome, and since his best hits from the period are better than the album-only tracks, almost everyone should just stick with a compilation.

hey say that good things come in threes… it must be true and Favorite Recordings also proudly presents the third edition of its acclaimed French Disco Boogie Sounds compilation series. Like on prior volumes, the complete tracklist is selected by label head honcho, Charles Maurice (aka Pascal Rioux), who’s unearthed 13 more forgotten and hidden tracks, all produced whether in France, in French, or by French artists between 1977 and 1987. The Funky Muchachos - Play Soul Jazz - 2008
Funk, Jazz | mp3 | VBR~212 | 66Mb

A sweet set of funky instrumentals from the Funky Muchachos – a combo who usually record under the guise of Tito Lopez, and who have a classic soul jazz approach to their groove! The core trio features drums, bass, and either organ or electric piano, depending on the track – and some cuts add in a bit of guest instrumentation on flute or guitar to round out the sound slightly. The keyboards are great – often quite stark and spare, with as much rhythmic focus as the other players in the group – and the electric piano tracks are especially nice, with a groove that's warm, but never too smooth or slick. Titles include versions of "What's Goin On", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Boogie On Reggae Woman", "Spooky", and "Let's Stay Together" – plus "I'm Comin Home", "Don't Take It Out", and "Donna's Way".
