Astor Piazzolla become hugely popular thanks to his ‘tango nuevo’ band and his short tango pieces. This disc shows his other, more serious side in some of his symphonic music, still mostly inspired by tango rhythms and catchy tunes. It is a great joy to have this music so well recorded and performed, and if you like Piazzolla’s music, you should definitely check this one out.

Recording an album is always an amazing adventure, this time even more so, and we are very grateful to everyone who made this album possible. But why was it so special? Firstly, because of the choice of program, of little known, exciting works, and secondly due to the fact that this project was overshadowed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

British composer Sir Lennox Berkeley still needs to be more widely appreciated, and this recording puts his music into a wider context of the environment that shaped him. France played a vital part in Berkeley’s development: apart from being a Francophile, circumstances brought him into contact with Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied formally during the years 1926–1932, which Berkeley spent in Paris. While there he also met Francis Poulenc, among other artistic figures.

A fluctuating musical form, bordering on improvisation, sometimes freely compiled, the fantasy is also something between imagination and image, an eminently romantic fantasy world that offers itself to us in all its richness.

The internationally renowned Czech-born composer Karel Husa, Pulitzer Prize and Grawemeyer Award winner, gathered invaluable experience from Arthur Honegger and Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied in Paris in the 1940s and 1950s. He was also greatly influenced by the folk music of his native Bohemia, as well as Slovakia, which is duly reflected in his Évocations de Slovaquie and Four Bohemian Sketches.
