This four-CD set is the perfect companion and complement to JSP's The Original Sonny Boy Williamson, Vol. 1, covering the blues harp legend's final eight years. John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson (aka Sonny Boy Williamson I) has, until fairly recently, been the odd man out in the story of Chicago blues stars, at least in terms of how history and posterity treated him. Having died in 1948, long before the significance of the blues or his work was recognized, he receded within the shadow cast by the older yet longer-lived name appropriator Sonny Boy Williamson II (aka Aleck Ford Miller), who got to record for Chess Records into the 1960s, and made it all the way to sessions with the likes of Eric Clapton and even a sadly never fulfilled intersection with the Band.

JSP's second four-CD box set dedicated to the memory of eastern bluesman Blind Boy Fuller opens with his final recordings. The rest of this portable archive is packed with blues and hokum by individuals who lived and worked in the same eastern seaboard region, actually collaborated with Fuller, or performed in a style comparable to his. This is quite similar to how JSP constructed their Lightnin' Hopkins and Sonny Boy Williamson sets. Fuller, whose given name was Fulton Allen, cut approximately 137 sides during a five-year period beginning in 1935. JSP's preceding volume is the ideal tool for appreciating and understanding this celebrated Piedmont-style blues musician, whose greatest claim to fame is the ever-popular "Trucking My Blues Away."

Despite the name on the box set, this is a Trumpet Records rather than a Sonny Boy Williamson compilation. Most of the songs are by artists other than Sonny, and most of those don't even feature him as guest harp player. It is a great compilation of Sonny's tracks for that label, including alternate takes, but it's more than that. It's the story of Sonny's Trumpet Records. He was the label's star, and this box set charts artists - friends and accompanists - that orbited him then, including B.B. King, Big Joe Williams, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (Elvis Presley's favourite), Elmore James and Little Milton. Trumpet was the first label to record Sonny, and here the songs that he'd reprise for Chess might be more primitive, but it's their vitality that makes them better (compare "Eyesight To The Blind" on Trumpet with "Born Blind" on Chess).

Rice Miller (or Alec or Aleck Miller – everything about this blues great is somewhat of a mystery) probably didn't need to take the name of the original Sonny Boy Williamson (John Lee Williamson) to get noticed, since in many ways he was the better musician, but Miller seemed to revel in confusion, at least when it came to biographical facts, so for whatever reason, blues history has two Sonny Boy Williamsons. Like the first Williamson, Miller was a harmonica player, but he really sounded nothing like his adopted namesake, favoring a light, soaring, almost horn-like sound on the instrument…
