Although the profound soul-stirring that sits at the very core of the Sapphische Ode only partially translates to a solo cello, Brahms’s skill as the mellowest of melodists and Mischa Maisky’s warming sound palette still manage to convey some of its poetic essence. My main problem here is not with the transcriptions – most of them work rather well – or, indeed, with Maisky’s tone, but with a manner of phrasing that is too ‘clean’ for what should be a soaring top line.

…I studied the Brahms songs in college and found them a bear to sing, particularly the final one, "Wenn ich mit Menschen- und mit Engelszungen redete" ("though I speak with the tongues of men and angels"), with its call for rich, mellow tone at the upper end of the baritone range. So Quasthoff's apparent ease in the most difficult passages impressed me no end, as did, of course, his ability to convey the beauty and power of the texts. In short, at full price, this CD's a bargain.

Brahms's songs of twilight.
In her third Pentatone album, Anna Lucia Richter returns to the German lied, making her recording debut as a mezzo-soprano with a recital of Brahms songs, together with pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz. Brahms is particularly suitable for this recording debut as his songs fit the mezzo-soprano voice like a glove, and the pieces presented here range from love poetry and dark Romanticism to folk songs, including the world-famous Wiegenlied. Richter’s profound engagement and knowledge of the German lied is perceivable in each song she performs, as well as in her insightful liner notes text for the booklet, in which she links the project to the notion of twilight (Dämmerung). Bushakevitz’s poetic playing offers the perfect tone for both the gloomy and the idyllic pieces.

A new compilation of Lieder recordings by the distinguished German bass-baritone, now famed for his authoritative Wagner performances. ‘‘I’m very happy,’ remarks Michael Volle in a booklet interview accompanying this reissue, which gathers together the three albums of Brahms Lieder he made in the spring of 2007. ‘Normally if you listen to a recording you would like to redo it immediately, because you discover so many mistakes or things you would have done better. But this one, it’s OK. Recordings will not always make money or sell a lot of discs, but for an artist, they can be a wonderful memory of a certain period in your life.’
