At the start of the 1970s a select group of up-and-coming record company bosses who had first made their mark during the late ‘60s were seriously challenging the supremacy of Jamaica’s established musical elite. This soon-to-be reggae royalty included such influential figures as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Harry Johnson, Bunny Lee, Winston Riley and the man whose output provides the focus for this 2CD set, Joe Gibbs. Having already enjoyed numerous rock steady and boss reggae hits, Gibbs expanded an already impressive roster of artists to include some of the island’s most popular acts, notably The Heptones, Judy Mowatt and Dennis Alcapone. ‘Freedom To The People’ includes the very best of the producer’s output from 1971 to 1972, a period during which he further cemented his reputation as one of the most creative and successful forces on the Jamaican music scene.
Packed with an array of reggae hits alongside an equally impressive number of long-lost gems that have remained unavailable on any format for half a century, the collection is an essential addition to the collections of all self-respecting fans of vintage Jamaican sounds.

Two CDs. Having enjoyed his first major Jamaican hit in 1971 with the ground-breaking single 'Blood And Fire', Winston Holness aka Niney 'The Observer' set about establishing a reputation as one of the island's most accomplished and innovative record producers. Within two years of his breakthrough hit, he had built a strong fan-base both within the land of his birth and in the UK, having issued a series of popular singles featuring himself and a small but impressive roster of local artists that included Big Youth, Max Romeo, Delroy Wilson and U Roy. 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner' comprises the very best of these works, commencing with Ken Boothe's hugely popular 1973 Jamaican chart-topping version of 'Silver Words'. Other highlights include Delroy Wilson's popular interpretations of 'Halfway Up The Stairs' and 'I Can't Help Myself' while there are also numerous early roots classics, most notably the title track, 'Rasta No Born Ya', 'Nice And Easy', 'Every Natty Want To Go Home'. Including 15 tracks that have remained unavailable on any format since their original release in the 70s, this 2CD collection demonstrates why Niney deserves to be ranked among the finest music makers to have first made their mark on the Jamaican music scene during the most creative period in the long and illustrious history of reggae music.

The Rolling Stones’ 1981 tour was the biggest rock and roll event of the year. The size of the production, the length and the pubulicity surrounding it were unprecedented. They played in the biggest arenas, sometimes for multiple nights, and orchestrated a media blitz which saw them appear on television somewhere in the world at least once a week on local stations, syndicated shows like Rona Barrett’s new news program “Inside & Out” and on cable television with several appearances on the brand new channel MTV. The big tour finale was the pay-per-view broadcast by satellite on the final night…
