I had a ball doing this album with Butch. Roy Eldridge was the jazz trumpet star in the Krupa band and we did some of his famous tunes like “After You’ve Gone” on this album.

When live jazz is played as well as it is on Live in Belfast, it's easy to say nice things about the music. Bass player Frank Tate leads a hot band featuring guitarist Howard Alden, tenor Harry Allen, pianist Dave McKenna, and drummer Butch Miles. The set was recorded during two live dates in Belfast in 1996 before a crowd that knew good jazz when they heard it. The band kick-starts this set with "Four Brothers," a swinging tune filled with eight minutes of breezy solos, then slides into the mellow "On the Alamo" with some lovely work by Alden and Allen. Tate's basslines are insistent on numbers like the jaunty "Lady Be Good" and "Just You, Just Me" (which he kicks off).

"Miles & Monk at Newport" was a combined album of a Miles Davis appearance at Newport with an appearance of Thelonious Monk, from the LP era. Despite the title, the two artists do not perform together on the LP, and they are represented on each side by separate live appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival.

This CD is masterful. A wonderful opportunity for those who already know Miles and Monk to hear more of the kind of sound you love. Two giants at their best in a live recording. If you are unfamiliar with the music of these two greats, this CD is a fantastic introduction to their sound. One word of caution, however, though this is a great CD recording of Miles and Monk together, it is by no means the last word, or note, on the kind of music the artists are, or were, capable of. This CD only demonstrates a tiny facet of the broad repertoires of Miles and Monk.

No, the Count isn't literally back… in fact, he's never really been away, as the Count Basie Orchestra has kept rolling along under a series of leaders since Basie's death in April 1984. This latest incarnation, directed by the Count's longtime bass trombonist Bill Hughes, was recorded in concert in October '05 at Denryoku Hall in Sendai, Japan. Following in the footsteps of Basie's Old Testament and New Testament bands, Aaron Woodward writes in his liner notes, "We are calling this the 'Born Again' era of the Count Basie Orchestra".

A touch of jazz genius pairing the charts of the "Fabulous Bill Holman" with the relentlessly swinging Bill Basie's Orchestra. The lines are pure Holman, particularly the call and response counterpoint between reeds and brass and, use of unison voicings. The classic 4/4 rhythm feel underpinned by guitarist Freddie Green is pure Basie.
