In 1963, Capitol Records producer Lee Gillette was looking for a way to amp up the singing career of young crooner Sue Raney. Impossibly young when she entered the music business, Raney nevertheless had the talent, looks, and delivery of a star – she just needed to shake that "little girl" aspect and tap into a more "adult" vein. Gillette tried to secure Stan Kenton as her backing arranger (for the album that would become All by Myself), but when that fell through, Capitol house arranger Ralph Carmichael was brought on board, and he channeled that stabbing, boisterous Kenton vibe to a T. In fact, the arrangements proved so volatile that Raney wondered how she was going to compete.

Good news: "The Man That Got Away" is not on this tribute to the Judy Garland songbook. Yes, it's an extraordinary song, but how many versions of it do we need? Apart from that absence, Linda Eder tackles many well-known nuggets long associated with Judy Garland–or as Leslie Bricusse puts it in his fawning liner notes, "Picasso Sings Rembrandt." Eder, a belter par excellence, lacks Garland's brittle vulnerability, and so she isn't at her best on songs that require a delicate touch, such as "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart."

The first and best wave of L.A. punk bands from 1977-1979 all broke up under-documented and unsigned, with the exception of X, the Germs, and, to a lesser extent, the Plugz. But the legacy of incredible pioneers such as the Weirdos, Dils, Controllers, and Screamers was the wide success of the harder, faster, younger bands that followed. The interest the 1977 bands awakened not only inspired the formation of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, T.S.O.L., Social Distortion, Agent Orange, Fear, the Adolescents, and others, but helped create a national market, enabling the newer bands to find labels, put out albums, and tour regularly. the Adolescents were perhaps the first of this second wave to put out an LP widely distributed throughout the U.S., selling well over five digits in 1981 (following on the heels of San Francisco's Dead Kennedys, who broke the doors open with their immortal Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables the previous year).

If imitation is the best form of flattery then the legendary Judy Garland has a lot to smile about from wherever she is watching. Broadway's Linda Eder has been wowing crowds since her big break in 1990 with The Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde which showcased what is now being called "The Voice". Having broken all the records in 1988's Star Search, this Brainerd, Minn. born gal is not intimated by a musical challenge.

Picture a late night, amid the craziness of the 1960s, and see a vulnerable, largely misunderstood woman in her 40s. She’s at home, or maybe on the road again. One thing is certain: she’s alone, with just her thoughts for company, speaking randomly into a tape recorder. “I’m just trying to get a few things down,” she says. “I’m all by myself, as usual. Don’t know if anybody is interested, but I am. I’m just trying to be heard.” The woman is Judy Garland, and heard she is, in AMERICAN MASTERS “Judy Garland: By Myself,” the first film that drew on Garland’s own words to tell her story. Culled from recordings she made in preparation for an autobiography she never finished, her writings and archival interviews, “By Myself” uniquely reveals Garland as she saw herself. “Do you realize how many people have talked about me, written about me, imitated me?” Garland says in the AMERICAN MASTERS documentary. “Well, it’s high time to stop. This is the story of my life and I, Judy Garland, am gonna talk.”
