1999's A La Legere was Jane Birkin's first album to be recorded with no input whatsoever from Serge Gainsbourg, but his absence – perhaps surprisingly – did not show. Indeed, it emerged as one of her most beautiful recordings yet, a transitional set, yes, but also a confident one. Philippe Lerichomme's arrangements are spellbinding throughout, while songs the quality of "Les Avalanches," "Trouble," and "C'est Comme Ca" would have dignified any of her earlier, more feted albums.

The heavy-breathing vocalist on one of the most infamous chart-toppers in British history, Jane Birkin enjoyed a long film and recording career. Born in London in 1946, she followed in her mother's footsteps and began acting at the Kensington Academy in London. While still a teenager, she made her stage debut in Graham Greene's 1964 production Carving a Statue.

Master Series is the title of a line of greatest hits albums, released in European countries primarily by PolyGram International, as well as A&M Records, Deram Records, FFRR Records, Mercury Records, and Polydor Records. In addition, some albums were reissued by Universal Music Group under the Universal Masters Collection and Millennium Edition titles.

Although critics will argue over the merits of his work, there is no denying that Serge Gainsbourg is one of the most fascinating figures in French popular music. He is best-known on this side of the Atlantic for "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus," a breathy duet with Jane Birkin whose slick, sensual soft rock melody won over many a listener (Birkin's convincingly acted moans of pleasure made it fairly scandalous).
