Boston's Quill performed at the original 1969 Woodstock festival and because of it, Atlantic Records' founder Ahmet Ertegun decided to sign them, in part because they would be releasing the soundtrack album to the festival. Ertegun not only signed them to Atlantic-subsidiary Cotillion but the band chose to producer the album on their own. Sadly, the band didn't gain any recognition from Woodstock since they were not in the documentary film or on the soundtrack. But this 1970 album is what they left behind. This is an illegal pressing allegedly released in Russia in 2017 on the Synton label.

Altoists Phil Woods and Gene Quill always made for a mutually inspiring team. Both of the similar-sounding musicians were competitive, influenced by (but not imitative of) Charlie Parker, and really knew bebop. This LP features the two altoists in top form on six of Woods' obscure originals, plus "Airegin" and "Solar." The rhythm section (pianist George Syran, bassist Teddy Kotick, and drummer Nick Stabulas) is tasteful and quietly supportive.

Even with Phil Woods standing out, the "four altos" on this jam session all sound pretty similar. Few listeners will be able to consistently pick out which solos are by Gene Quill and which by Sahib Shihab, Hal Stein or Woods. The solos (and the backup of pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Louis Hayes) are generally hard-swinging and well-played, but the strong influence of Charlie Parker makes all of the altoists sound alike.

As time passes by, there are bands that became strong names in their respective Metal/Rock genres. They become what can be called institutions due the recognition to their work, and maybe to their resilience to the passage of time. And the Swedish quartet THE QUILL seems to have both aspects at their side, because “Earthside” is an amazing release…

Quill were formed in 1975 by three musicians on multi-keyboards, bass & vocals and drums in California. Their sound was very much in the ELP/classical rock vein. The finished this, their first album in 1977, which was recorded using their own funds. A very, very small number were pressed onto vinyl as test pressings in the hope of securing a recording contract, but were unsuccessful. Obviously these test pressing are extremely rare, but luckily Greg Walker of Syn-Phonic tracked these guys down, and this album is now available for anyone, instead of the record-collector lucky few!

One might think that with all of the attention that Handel’s music has received over the years and especially since the tercentenary of his birth in 1985, that no stone has been left unturned in the effort to accord the composer his due. Indeed, there have been revelatory and monumental cycles of his operas and oratorios—especially Messiah—as well as numerous releases of Music for the Royal Fireworks, Water Music, the Concerti grossi, ops. 3 and 6—the list goes on and on, almost ad nauseam. As with any composer, though, there are darker recesses in Handel’s œuvre that seemed to have attracted the interest of a multitude of dust bunnies, but few performers. This Hyperion recording, originally recorded in 1988 and released under the title Music for Royal Occasions, holds three such works specifically composed for English courtly festivities of various import between 1713 and 1736.

Reissue with the latest remastering. Comes with liner notes. The meetings of alto saxophonist Phil Woods and Gene Quill, such as this 1956 sextet date for RCA, are always enjoyable. In addition to baritone saxophonist Sol Schlinger, Woods and Quill are joined by pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Buddy Jones, and drummer Shadow Wilson. The focus is on the two altoists, but there is occasionally blowing room for Schlinger and McKenna, too. Gene Orloff's snappy "Sax Fifth Avenue" and Woods' brisk "Four Flights Up" are the highlights of the date, along with several works by Bill Potts. This is a typically solid effort by Phil Woods and Gene Quill.
