"A landmark recording." ~Early Music Review / "If you have just come into the market for this musical subtlety, I urge you to go for Cordes." ~Fanfare
"This new SACD by the Hymnus Choirboys of Stuttgart and Musica Fiata demonstrates how Schütz worked with opulent Italian impressions while serving as court chapel master in Dresden and employs the finest 2+2+2 technique to transport lavish sound and Venetian grandezza straight to you in your living room…" ~prestoclassical
In spite of the decline of the Saxon Hofkapelle, Schütz produced more collections, with which his reputation reached its height in Germany and northern Europe: the collection of motets Geistliche Chormusik (Dresden, 1648) and the third volume of Symphoniae Sacrae (1650), again based on German texts and with which he intended to end his career as Kapellmeister. This was however not to be, and it was only under the young Elector Johann Georg II that Schütz was finally granted his wish to retire.
Schütz’s ‘Christmas story’ is an absolute delight from beginning to end, its charming tableaux of angels, shepherds and wise men completely belying the composer’s old age and constrained circumstances. Here it’s the jubilant climax to a programme of Christmas motets from the 1640s.
Chockshut is the evidence that the Koch-Schütz-Studer trio have expanded their lineup, and consequently, their ability to wreak havoc on musical structures everywhere. Adding a guitarist like Stephan Wittwer, for whom heavy metal and free jazz are synonymous terms, or trombonist Andreas Marti, with his penchant for lower-register sheets of sound, or a pianist such as Jacques Demierre, who writes music and plays in the theater, creates a sextet of uncommon possibility. True to form, the ten selections on Chockshut are full of sharp cuts and quick maneuvers to break the music out of any recognizable compositional form.
This particular St. Matt is constantly being reissued on one budget label or another, and for good reason: it happens to be superb. The Schutz SAINT MATTHEW PASSION is a fairly austere vocal work, light years distant from the familiar Bach version you may know and love. But it's the stark beauty of the Schutz vision that I admire and enjoy; it is reverential, as it should be, devotional, a tad bleak, yet utterly compelling. It tends to make one immediately introspective. Should you have any leanings at all towards experimenting with baroque vocal music, I would avidly suggest hearing Schutz; and the price of the CD precludes hesitation.
