Pas de saison pour la valse. En 1929, soit dix ans avant d'instituer la tradition du 1er janvier dans la salle dorée du Musikverein, c'est au Festival de Salzbourg que Clemens Krauss prend l'habitude de diriger les Wiener Philharmoniker dans un programme entièrement consacré à la famille Strauss. De ces soirées estivales, aucune trace sonore. Mais des célébrations du jour de l'an fixées au disque, rien que de l'immortel. Plus de vingt ans après Le Beau Danube bleu royal de Szell, ses valses ont, elles aussi, le port princier. Qui d'autre lit les Feuilles du matin avec une telle distinction ? Si tout n'est qu'absolue clarté, superbement nuancé, rien ne paraît cassant, et encore moins fragile - écoutez l'énergique fouetté mis à l'Opus 263 de Josef. Seules rivalisent d'aristocratie les Roses du Sud selon Krips.

Simi Valley-based film composer Joseph Metcalfe will make his national debut this Thursday, Jan. 20, with the release of The King’s Daughter. The film, directed by Sean McNamara, is based on Vonda N. McIntyre’s Nebula award-winning novel The Moon and the Sun and is a highly anticipated fantasy adventure story beloved by science-fiction fans and beyond. A unique and inventive tale, it takes a special talent to compose music capable of blending into such a fantastical realm. Metcalfe, no stranger to the mystical elements of music, was up to the challenge.Other musical masterminds behind The King’s Daughter include successful film and television composer John Coda and esteemed video game composer Grant Kirkhope, with Metcalfe leading the project. The composing team will make appearances at various Regal Theaters throughout Ventura County during the film’s run, and Metcalfe encourages any filmgoers who spot them to come introduce themselves.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky 7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893 was a Russian composer of the Romantic period. He was the first Russian composer whose music would make a lasting impression internationally. He wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, his First Piano Concerto, several symphonies, and the opera Eugene Onegin.
Although musically precocious, Tchaikovsky was educated for a career as a civil servant. There was scant opportunity for a musical career in Russia at the time and no system of public music education. When an opportunity for such an education arose, he entered the nascent Saint Petersburg Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching that he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied by the Russian composers of The Five with whom his professional relationship was mixed.

Most of us only think of the great Antal Dorati as a conductor, but this prominent Hungarian came from a family of musicians and started the study of music at the age of five, learning the cello a couple of years later and composition lessons beginning at 12; this in spite of the fact that he had already written several works, including three operas with original libretti, all of which he considered to be immature effords. His first composition teacher was Leo Weiner (1885-1960) who had a profound effect on Dorati's musical taste and performing background.
