Spider-Woman #1-2 (New Monthly Series, Ongoing)
Eng | RS & Hotfile | 2 CBR | Marvel Comics | Sep 23 - Oct 21 2009 | 26.9 MB Total

finally got back her own ongoing series after more than 26 years. In between there had been a miniseries and various appearances in other Marvel titles. Until recently she had been held captive by Skrulls and her good name had been dragged through the mud. Spider-Woman aka Jessica Drew sits around feeling sorry for herself until Abigail Brand offers her the chance to exact a little revenge on the alien race who wronged her by becoming an agent of S.W.O.R.D. and hunting down the remaining Skrulls who are still in hiding. Considering the creative team involved, issue #1 was a very good first issue. There's the origin of Spider-Woman in a nutshell, a recap of the whole Skrull invasion story that nicely sets up the status quo, fight scenes and tease to segue with the next issue. And of course there's Spider-Woman costume. As for the rest--the art (much too reminiscent of Daredevil for me, but Jessica has a face!), the way it's written (Bendis' first-person approach, for instance), etc., you have to read this series yourselves and form your own opinions.

Issue #1 goes through the origin of Spider-Woman in a nutshell and recaps the whole Skrull invasion story that nicely sets up the status quo. Eisner award winner Alex Maleev carries his distinctive granular artwork over from Daredevil (Jessica has a face!), and Brian Michael Bendis puts his stamp with a first person approach. Issues #1-5 comprise the initial story arc.

A spoof in the tradition of , the 4-issue miniseries Barack the Barbarian took its cue when US President Barack Obama mentioned he collected comics as a kid. Published by Devil's Due Publishing and written by Larry Hama and drawn by Christopher Schons, it is set in a time of swords and sorcery. A gathering of children listen as a shaman retells the legend of . Riding in on a donkey, Barack the Barbarian is determined to set things right in the city of Warshingstun, “where every word uttered was lie, and every soul was for sale. A place where men traded dark secrets and openly peddled a powerful drug named Influence.” The political jokes and gags fly fast and furious; but things really kick into high gear when Red Sarah, the Fighting Queen of the North, appears. I hate to say it, but... I want more of Red Sarah!

Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev make a great creative team (an Eisner Award winner at that); the first person viewpoint I think is effective and the artwork is beginning to settle down. I noticed a subtle change in Jessica's face though.

A four-issue miniseries about , an obscure Conan-like character breaking the fourth wall to confront his creator who is vaguely reminiscent of Robert E. Howard, all narrated by an old savage from Starr's world, set to rap, under Marvel Comics' MAX imprint. How about that? Pretty artwork, too.
