First Name: Carmen (1983)
The protagonist is Carmen X, a sexy female member of a terrorist gang. She asks her uncle Jean, a washed-up film director if she can borrow his beachside house to make a film with some friends, but they are in fact planning to rob a bank. During the robbery she falls in love with a security guard. The film intercuts between Carmen's escape with the guard, her uncle's attempt to make a comeback film, and a string quartet attempting to perform Beethoven.

The entire subplot takes place in rehearsals, and includes a delightful scene of the entire troop spontaneously bursting into a parody of the campy March of the Toreadors. Saura adds scenes that depict the fantasies of the characters, which is an element that the director uses in many of his films…

Lurking in the shadows is Christian Magny (Jonathan Pryce), Paul's dedicated assistant, who falls in with Beatrice Manceau (Cherie Lunghi), a free-spirited young woman who is pregnant by a lover who has no wish to marry her or raise the child. Things go awry in the Canova household when a trusted secretary is accused by Vera of stealing jewellery and subsequently commits suicide. But is Vera as calculating as first impressions suggest?
