The word ‘legend’ is thrown about so nonchalantly these days that it’s lost a great deal of its shine. But there are still some artists for whom the word is far too feeble. Not many. But Carole King is definitely one of them. Ms. King is one of the truly indelible voices of rock and roll. In the 1960s, along with one time husband Gerry Goffin, she penned a string of unforgettable hits for other artists that reads like a roster of some of the best pop/rock tunes ever recorded: “Chains”, “The Locomotion”, “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman”, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “Up on the Roof” are just a few. In the 70s, with some encouragement, she decided to put some of her songs to record herself.

Bouncing around smaller indie labels in the '90s after a few failed albums on majors, Carole King rebounded with this self-released 2001 disc on her own Rockingale (an anagram of Carole King and a takeoff on her song "Nightingale") imprint. Although it's not a totally successful return to her past triumphs, the disc is one of her best post-'70s albums and occasionally even rivals her most enduring work. Wisely,

Born Carole Klein in Brooklyn, by her teens Carole King was heading into Manhattan after school to sell her songs on Tin Pan Alley. She cut a few singles in the late 50's and early 60s, but first made a name for herself as a songwriter, working with lyricist/husband Gerry Goffin: they cranked out hits for a plethora of acts, and even turned their babysitter into a recording star when they wrote “Locomotion” for Little Eva. They also managed to stir up some controversy with “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)”, a look at domestic violence that no one was ready for (recently covered by Courtney Love).
