Cartography

This Volume addresses the prehistorical and historical mapping traditions of premodern Europe and the Mediterranean world. A substantial introductory essay surveys the historiography and theoretical development of the history of cartography and situates the work of the multi-volume series within this scholarly tradition.

Volume 2 of The History of Cartography focuses on mapping in non-Western culture, an area of study historically overlooked by Western scholars. Extensive original research makes this the foremost source for defining, describing and analyzing this vast and unexplored theater of cartographic history. Book 2 chronicles maps, mapping, and mapmaking in East and Southeast Asia. This book considers the cartographic traditions of China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Tibet, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines, presenting significant new research and interpretation of archaeological, literary, and graphic sources.

The indigenous maps discussed in this book offer a rich resource for disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, art history, ethnology, geography, history, psychology, and sociology.

This volume contains papers on the general theme of Chartered Companies as well as papers on a wider array of themes within the field of historical cartography. The volume comprises most of the research presented at the 3rd International Symposium of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography which took place at the University of Texas at Arlington on October 11–12, 2010.

The book presents several contributions at different areas and activities showing the importance of the cartography to the perception and organization of the territory.
