Cedar Walton is a great jazz master whose bop-based style has influenced younger pianists over many decades. Also known for his great composing, this time Walton chose to do, for Venus Records, a songbook by legendary film composer Victor Young. Aided superby by super-bassist Buster Williams and – a sharp drummer of a younger generation, Walton plays Young's beautiful songs with relaxed elegance and modern jazz flair.

Over two years after advance copies teased the jazz press about the capabilities of teenaged alto saxophonist Dmitry Baevsky's surprising chops, the Lineage label finally came into being in early 2006, with Baevsky's debut as one of their inaugural releases. Well accompanied by veterans like pianist Cedar Walton and drummer Jimmy Cobb, along with bassist John Webber and guitarist Ilya Lushtak, the young Russian is still forming his own style, though he has obviously done his musical homework and was prepared for the recording session, which is sometimes a problem with young musicians prematurely given the opportunity to record as leaders.

The first of three CDs featuring tenorman Clifford Jordan and his "Magic Triangle" (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins) has fairly lengthy versions of "Pinocchio," "That Old Devil Moon," Walton's "The Maestro," and Jordan's "The Highest Mountain." Recorded live in Amsterdam, the musicians sound inspired by each other's presence, and there are many strong solos from Jordan and Walton. Well worth investigating.

One of the hippest Milt Jackson albums of the 60s – a set that definitely lives up to its Museum Of Modern Art setting! The performance is one of the most famous from that museum's well-remembered series of 60s jazz concerts – and it features Milt Jackson's quintet really stretching out nicely – hitting sharper tones and bolder notes than in some of their other sessions of the decade, and possibly picking up a freer feel overall in the live setting. Milt's vibes are wonderfully accompanied by the reeds of Jimmy Heath and piano of Cedar Walton – both players who mix soul and modern elements in the same sort of perfect blend that Jackson hits. And the rhythm section is tightly snapping and soulful – never too groove-oriented, but always conscious of a sense of a swing – thanks to bass from Ron Carter and drums from Candy Finch.

Jazz / Hard Bop / Post Bop / Saxophone

The second of three volumes recorded in 1975 featuring tenorist Clifford Jordan with Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins finds the quartet in top form. Walton's "Midnight Waltz" is the first of three extended performances, the upbeat midtempo waltz featuring a rollicking solo by its composer, while Jordan's suave playing is buoyed by Higgins' driving rhythm. Walton's "Bleecker Street Theme" sounds more like a set closer due to its barely one-minute length; then the focus turns to standards, including a spacious treatment of "I Should Care" that has Jordan taking quite a few liberties with the melody from the very beginning, followed by a glistening interpretation of "Stella by Starlight." The CD reissue adds Higgins' tribute "Alias Buster Williams," which opens with a drum solo and then transforms into an uptempo post-bop setting with a Latin undercurrent as the band is added.

This excellent trio session forms a sort of transition between bassist Ray Brown's work with the Oscar Peterson Trio and his own small-group sessions of the '80s and '90s. With pianist Cedar Walton and drummer Elvin Jones, Brown explores seven strong melodies (four standards, two by Walton, and the bassist's "Slippery") in typically swinging and bluish fashion. ~ AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson is joined by a top-notch rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist John Clatyon and drummer Billy Higgins), a six-piece horn section and a large string section on various selections but, despite the potential distractions and competition, Bags's vibes are the stars throughout. The music on this CD is mostly standards along with four Jackson bluish originals and a song apiece from Clayton and Walton. Milt Jackson's style has not changed since the 1950s but he has retained his enthusiasm and creativity and remained a potent force in jazz.
