Charlie Sexton

Charles Wayne Sexton is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Sexton is best known for the 1985 solo hit "Beat's So Lonely" and for his work with the band Arc Angels. Charlie Sexton, released in 1989, is the second studio album released by singer/guitarist Charlie Sexton. An about-face, with more emphasis on Sexton's guitar playing and Texas roots. Although a youngster compared to most of his Austin friends, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Charlie Sexton has already had several phases to his career. Sexton, raised in Austin, TX, made his debut with Pictures for Pleasure in 1985 at age 16. He followed that up with a self-titled second album when he was 20. Because word of his reputation as a prodigy guitar player spread far and wide, he found himself an in-demand session player while still in his late teens, and he had the opportunity to record with Ron Wood, Keith Richards, and Bob Dylan.

Like many teenagers, Charlie Sexton lusted after rock stardom – the only difference was, he had a chance to pursue his dream. Sexton certainly looked like the part, with his high cheek bones and pompadour, but since he was living in the '80s instead of the '50s he worshipped, his producers decided to push him toward new wave for his debut album, Pictures for Pleasure. The teenaged guitarist had been bashing out blues and roots-rock around his native Austin, Texas, but the market for that music was limited – hence the decision to layer the record with drum machines and synthesizers.

Charlie Watts “Anthology” is an affectionate retrospective and a reflection of just how frequently Watts was able to exercise his jazz muscles between Rolling Stones commitments to create a bespoke discography of his own. Including 3 unreleased tracks. The names of Charlie's jazz heroes fell from his lips like a superfan turning the pages of a personal scrapbook. Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, Dave Green, Stan Tracey, Peter King, Courtney Pine, Gail Thompson, Brian Lemon, Gerard Presencer, the Red Rodney group and collaborator Jim Keltner. He knew every player, every session, every album, every outfit they wore on the cover, and he spoke about them with a deep and genuine reverence. He may have been a globally loved hero in the biggest band in the word, but he swatted away any compliment or comparison with his musical favourites. He counted himself their admirer, never their equal. The Anthology includes an extended essay by Paul Sexton which documents Charlie Watt’s jazz career and the essential albums covered in the collection.

This Ottawa-based blues guitarist and singer has been under-appreciated on the Canadian scene, though she did win a Juno in 2001 for Love Coming Down. She has always been held in high regard in Austin, TX though. She was based there in the '90s, recording for the famed Antone's label, and she returned to the Lone Star state to record this sparkling new album.

This 14-track collection brings together some of the more notable entries from the soundtracks of the Quentin Tarantino films Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers and True Romance, with a running commentary through this disc from the director himself.
