Howlin' Wolf - The Chess Box [Recorded 1951-1973, 3CD Box Set] (1991) (Repost)

EAC Rip | FLAC (image+.cue+log) - 904 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 503 MB | Covers - 107 MB
Genre: Blues, Chicago Blues | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Chess/MCA Records (CHD3-9332)

This three-CD box set currently rates as the best - and most digestible - overview of Howlin' Wolf's career. Disc one starts with the Memphis sides that eventually brought him to the label, including hits like "How Many More Years," but also compiling unissued sides that had previously only been available on vinyl bootlegs of dubious origin and fidelity. The disc finishes with an excellent cross section of early Chicago sessions, including classic Wolf tracks like "Evil," "Forty Four," "I'll Be Around," and "Who Will Be Next?" Disc two picks it up from there, guiding listeners from mid- to late-'50s barnburners like "The Natchez Burning" and "I Better Go Now" to the bulk of the Willie Dixon classics. The final disc runs out the last of the Dixon sessions into mid-'60s classics like "Killing Floor," taking the listener to a nice selection of his final recordings…

Classical, Opera | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 00:56:41 | 131 MB
Label: CSO Resound

This new live recording pairs profound works by two of the 20th century s greatest composers: Arnold Schoenberg and Dmitri Shostakovich. Writer Phillip Huscher describes Schoenberg s 'Kol Nidre' as a 'stark, strong modernist statement,' set to the prayer said on the eve of Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement. Schoenberg, who had fled Europe in 1934, premiered the work in Los Angeles in 1938, one month before the devastating anti-Jewish pogroms of Kristallnacht took place throughout Nazi-Germany.

Carly Simon: No Secrets is presented on audio Blu-ray courtesy of Rhino Music, and while there is an AVC encoded 1:78:1 "image", this is another Rhino release that features a static menu. All of the simultaneously released Atmos / Quad offerings from Rhino this time have the same conceit of having the track playing in one color, with another color showing up if you use your arrow buttons to move down through the track list. In this case, the track playing highlights in blue, and if you use your arrow buttons to move through the track, the titles turn black as you move down the list (until one is chosen, at which point it changes to blue), but otherwise there are no "moving parts". (I might just slightly joke that this "black and blue" approach may recall another kind of edgy Simon tune, "After the Storm", which alludes to some perhaps questionable violence in a relationship.) While that part of the disc authoring between the four simultaneous releases is consistent, unfortunately toggling between codecs isn't among this quartet.

Shostakovich's suite explores similarly weighty concerns, including themes of love, morality, death, and the human spirit through the poetry of the Renaissance master Michelangelo. Although originally conceived to honor the fifth centenary of the artist's birth, Shostakovich's settings became a highly personal testament to concerns the two men shared across the centuries.

Exploring 20th-century repertoire – both acknowledged masterpieces and new discoveries – this 14-CD anthology reflects the diverse aesthetic strands of Pierre Boulez’s programming over the course of his ground-breaking and influential career. These Erato recordings, made between 1966 and 1992, feature composers otherwise absent from Boulez’s discography – Xenakis, Donatoni, Grisey, Dufourt, Ferneyhough, Harvey and Höller – and the first CD release of the interpretation of Stravinsky’s incantatory Les Soucoupes in the version for female voices and four horns.

Fritz Reiner was one of the foremost conductors of his time. Crowning his long career in Europe and America was the decade from 1954 to 1963 as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra – an illustrious partnership that ranks along such other historical tenures as Karajan’s in Berlin, Szell’s in Cleveland and Bernstein’s in New York.
