Chinese Ghost Story

This Chinese ghost film centers on the theme of the haunted streets in Hong Kong, where four loosely connected stories are depicted. A group of young friends go on a camping trip in the countryside, where Ken encounters a mysterious woman near a grave. Afterward, Ken's life is changed forever as he becomes a victim of ghost meddling. As the friends journey back to Hong Kong without Ken, another sinister story takes place. Mrs. To has a date with her husband to celebrate their wedding anniversary, but becomes concern when he doesn't show up. The outcome of this second story leads to Ken's friend Jojo being courted by a ghost, and ultimately leads to the final story where Peter Butt unknowingly visits a haunted theater with some of Ken's friends.

In Hong Kong, the successful designer Ming lives with his beloved girlfriend Wai Luk and her younger sister who loves ghost story comic books. When Wai is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Ming's life is turned upside-down, and he sacrifices his career to spend more time with Wai.

Set in a 1920s Japan, at a time when rapid modernization broke the bonds of tradition and set the stage for the Japanese militarism of the 30s, these independent productions allowed Suzuki’s penchant for stunning visuals, and unconventional narratives to reach new creative heights. Seijun Suzuki’s Taisho Trilogy is cinema at it’s most fantastic and bizarre, and are now regarded are as undisputed masterpieces of world cinema.

If Japanese animation is gaining an ever-increasing legion of overseas admirers, the work of those active outside of the nation's major studios still appears to be bewilderingly overlooked. One such character is Kihachiro Kawamoto, a pioneer in the neglected field of stop motion puppet animation. Born in 1925, Kawamoto has been working in the medium since the 50s, but it was not until a fortuitous meeting with the Czech maestro Jiri Trnka that his puppets truly began to take on a life of their own.

Humphrey Bogart stars in this melodrama-spiced adventure tale about an American flyer in civil-war torn 1947 China, hiding out from a ruthless warlord (Lee J. Cobb) by assuming the identity of a slain priest in a remote mission settlement. There, he loses his heart to his needy flock of villagers and to the lovely mission nurse (Gene Tierney), a devout Catholic tormented by her taboo attraction to this putative man of the cloth.

Fleur is the blue angel in one of Hong Kong's "flower houses" - bordellos and night clubs of the 1930's. A detached and beautiful performer, she falls in love with Twelfth Master Chan, heir to a chain of pharmacies. They agree to a suicide pact. Jump ahead 50 years to modern Hong Kong: Fleur's ghost appears in Yuen's newspaper office, wanting to place an ad to find Chan, who never arrived in the afterlife. Yuen, and his equally bewildered girl friend, An Chor, are captivated by Fleur and her story.

Presented by Jeonju International Film Festival, directed by three filmmakers, Jeonju Digital Project will be the preview of our films in the future that offer us new visions. The chosen three filmmakers for the First Jeonju Digital Project are - Kwang-Su Park, Yun-Tae Kim, and Zhang Yua-in. The filmmakers were given three conditions: to make a film in digital format, no longer than 30 minutes, and using a limited production budget. The three films construct one feature-length film entitled N, representing Next Generation, New Technology and Networking which are the common themes. Projects like Jeonju Digital Project, which focus on film production, creativity, and interactive technology, reflect the spirit of JIFF as they the zeitgeist of contemporary film.

Set in ancient Tibet under the shadow of the Himalayas, the young prince Lhamoklodan learns of his father's mysterious death and returns to the Kingdom Jiaobo. Troubled by his mother's sudden remarriage to his uncle Kulo-ngam, he swears to find the truth of his father's death. His obsession of revenge overwhelms his spirit and shadows his love to Odsaluyang. When he points his sword at the new king, Queen Nanm finally tells her beloved son, Lhamoklodan, the true identity of his uncle. In the struggle to face his destiny and fight his demons, a new king is born.
