RabihAbou-Khalil has asserted himself in the avant-garde as a composer as well as an instrumentalist. This is not just because he is ahead of his time - but because he also questions what others might pursue without further reflection. With his original composing technique, his unconstrained, yet daring approach to classical Arabic music, he has found a musical language entirely of his own.Abou-Khalil's music thrives on creative encounters and not on exoticism. From a combination of diverse cultural elements something very personal and coherent emerges. Thus it would be fruitless to mull over descriptions such as Orient or Occident, jazz, world music or classical.

In the latter half of the '90s, Phil Collins' career hit a bit of a sales slump, and instead of shamelessly chasing after another number one single, he decided to change pace and try something different. Returning to the drums, he assembled the Phil Collins Big Band, reviving the sound of such idols as Buddy Rich and Sonny Payne, but largely sticking with his original material. After a brief European tour in 1996 (which happened to feature Quincy Jones as conductor and Tony Bennett as vocalist), he created a new version of the band featuring several accomplished jazz and studio musicians in support – notably alto saxophonist Gerald Albright, but also guitarist Daryl Stuermer, tenor saxophonist James Carter, and pianists George Duke and Brad Cole, among many others, in varying roles.

Part of a great move forward for Japanese drummer George Otsuka in the 70s – a player who'd really made some great waves with his trio material at the end of the 60s, but who found a way deepen his groove with a larger group on records like this – really standing out as one of the most spiritual players on his scene at the time! The players are all in Japanese, so we can't tell you their names – but the quintet feature an excellent reedman who blows both soprano sax and tenor, a deep-voiced trumpeter, and a pianist who also serves up a fair bit of Fender Rhodes too – both elements used in a really strong way over these long tracks on the set, which have a similar blend of soul and spirit as the best Japanese Columbia jazz sessions of the time. Otsuka's bolder than ever before – especially as the album moves on – and titles include "Sea Breeze", "Jumping Cats", "Potato Chips", and "Cannibal".

Keiji "George" Otsuka (born April 6, 1937, Tokyo) is a Japanese jazz drummer. Otsuka first began playing professionally with Sadao Watanabe's quartet toward the end of the 1950s. He worked for several years with Hidehiko Matsumoto in the 1960s, then led his own trio with Hideo Ichikawa, in addition to working with Roy Haynes. He was a member of the Four Drums ensemble which did a tour of Japan in 1970; Jack DeJohnette, Roy Haynes, and Mel Lewis were the other drummers in this group. Otsuka was frequently tapped as a percussionist for Japanese tours of international musicians in the 1970s and 1980s, such as Richie Beirach, Elvin Jones, Kenny Kirkland, John Scofield, Nana Vasconcelos, Miroslav Vitous, Phil Woods, and Reggie Workman. He was also the founder of the trio We Three, with Hiroyuki Takamoto and Hideaki Kanazawa.

"Soulful", an album by Dionne Warwick, was released in 1969 on Scepter Records. It was the first of Warwick's Scepter albums that did not directly involve her longtime production and songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David being produced by Warwick and Chips Moman and comprising covers of Soul or what were considered Soul-influenced Pop songs designed to showcase Warwick as more of an R&B singer than had her collaborations with Bacharach and David.

World-famous for the Warsaw Concerto from the film Dangerous Moonlight, Richard Addinsell was one of Britain’s leading composers for stage and screen. This selection ranges widely over every area of his achievement and includes the theme from his first international film success, Goodbye Mr. Chips, and the overture from Tom Brown’s Schooldays, which contains some of his finest music. The Smokey Mountains, an evocative ‘concerto’ in three movements, is a rare example of the genre, while The Isle of Apples reflects his importance as a composer of music for radio plays.
