This disc presents three vocal pieces for soprano with oboe and basso continuo, interspersed between four trio sonatas for 2 oboes & basso continuo. The first cantata "Mi palpita il cor" was written in England - there are four existing variants, but this presented here is probably the earliest, the date given here as 1717. The theme is typically pastoral, with the singer's amorous affliction, the sorrow and hope of being in love with Chloris. The second vocal piece "Meine Seele hort im Sehen" is one of Handel's nine German da capo arias written around 1724/25 which were never published; they were songs of spiritual devotion rejoicing in God's creation as manifested in the beauty of nature, and not intended for concert performance.

"I heard him sing only once in Annales, too little to speak of him at length, enough to be entranced. Was it beautiful? No, it was unforgettable. The voice was nothing exceptional… a fine baritone voice, not very large, flexible as grass, ruled with a marvelous intelligence, a reflective divination… He sang as we breathe, out of necessity.” [Bernard Gavoty / "Reynaldo Hahn: Le musicien de la Belle Époque"]

On this new recording, James Baillieu and friends explore the lesser-known chamber music of Reynaldo Hahn, better known principally for the unashamed Romanticism of his songs of melodies. Regarded as a French composer, Hahn was actually born in Venezuela, returning to Paris at the age of three and showing a prodigious talent for music- entering the Paris Conservatoire aged just ten to study composition with Massenet and Saint-Saens- and like his teachers, he worked in a strongly melodic and tonal idiom.

Wolfgang Sotill passed away much too early this year in March at the age of 64. The theologian, author, tour guide, farmer and journalist – for decades also for the Kleine Zeitung – now comes to another honor. At the festival "Sounding Jerusalem", which is taking place for the second time in Graz due to corona, one of the two evenings in the Minoritensaal is dedicated to him.Cellist and impresario Erich Oskar Huetter had repeatedly talked to Sotill about joint ideas for the festival. Unfortunately, there were no more realizations. Israel expert Sotill would certainly have had a lot of profound contributions to the concept of "Sounding Jerusalem", which Huetter founded in 2006 not only as a chamber concert series on historical ground, "but as a festival for all people in the region - regardless of their religious, social and cultural affiliation", as he always characterizes his "heart project".

Temptation, prohibition, good, evil… ‘how relevant are these in today's world?’ asks Benjamin Appl. With the complicity of pianist James Baillieu, we are taken on a musical arc from simple folk songs through to the great song composers such as Schubert, Schumann and Wolf, along the way visiting the French masters Debussy and Poulenc, exploring ‘new objectivity’ with Weill and Eisler and enjoying compositions by Casucci, Heggie and others. The metaphor of forbidden fruit gives Benjamin and James a wide range of possible interpretations. Whilst some of the song settings centre on sensuality, others focus on socially immoral topics such as incest or sensitive subjects such as abortion. The German baritone embodies each of these stories with a passion and dramatic sense that makes this album a kaleidoscopic and astonishing journey through time and space.
