Chris Farlowe always seemed destined for great things as a singer – and based on the company he kept on-stage and the people he worked with in the mid-'60s, he did succeed, at least on that level. Born John Henry Deighton in Islington, North London, in 1940, he reached his early teens just as the skiffle boom was breaking in England, and was inspired by Lonnie Donegan to enter music. His first band was his own John Henry Skiffle Group, where he played guitar as well as sang, but he gave up playing to concentrate on his voice, as he made the switch to rock & roll. He eventually took the name Chris Farlowe, the surname appropriated from American jazz guitarist Tal Farlow, and was fronting a group called the Thunderbirds, as Chris Farlowe & the Thunderbirds. They built their reputation as a live act in England and Germany, and slowly switched from rock & roll to R&B during the early years of the '60s. Their debut single, "Air Travel," released in 1962, failed to chart, but the following year, Chris Farlowe & the Thunderbirds (whose ranks included future star guitarist Albert Lee) were signed to EMI's Columbia imprint, through which they issued a series of five singles thru 1966, all of which got enthusiastic critical receptions while generating poor sales.

Still possessed of one of the crunchiest growls in rock, Chris Farlowe divides his time these days between the sporadically re-formed Colosseum and a solo career that just won't quit. Hungary for the Blues spotlights the latter, a live set recorded at the Gastroblues Festival Parks in Hungary (hence the awful pun of the CD title) back in 2000, and it's as powerful a representation of his live show as you could hope for. Spinning back and forth throughout his career, the repertoire hits all the high spots. "Out of Time," "Handbags and Gladrags," and a terrific take on the Small Faces' "All or Nothing" spin him back to the days when he was a bona fide pop star; a clutch of bluesier numbers (a deliciously protracted "Stormy Monday," "This Guitar Don't Lie," "Lonesome Road") exemplify the music that he's always loved the best; and Randy Newman's "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" and Glenn Frey's "Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed" remind listeners just what a great ear for a song Farlowe's always had.

A very crisp band backs up the legendary Chris Farlowe on this DVD beautifully filmed at Bonn, Germany's Rockpalast. The music is wonderfully recorded, equal to the visuals with tight close-ups of the vocalist and his five-piece group as they drive through "Blues as Blues Can Get," "I'll Sing the Blues for You," "I Don't Want to Sing the Blues No More" – you get the picture – the '60s pop singer is a forceful and reliable blues master in the new millennium.

Chris Farlowe's (born John Henry Deighton and also known as Little Joe Cook) early bands are The Thunderbirds and Colosseum. He is probably best known for his hit singles "Out of Time", which rose to No. 1 in the UK in 1966, and, as Little Joe Cook, "Stormy Monday". Farlowe joined Atomic Rooster in February '72 and sang on both Made In England and Nice N' Greasy '73. His very much unique style of vocals led Rooster up to '74. After Atomic Rooster, he has continued recording and performing as "The Chris Farlowe Band" and others.

Van Morrison's 2016 album Keep Me Singing included the hard blues track "Goin' Down to Bangor," a tune that directly foreshadowed Roll with the Punches, a set of five originals and ten covers drenched in Chicago-style blues. He also heavily engages in collaboration here with appearances by Jeff Beck, Chris Farlowe, Jason Rebello, Paul Jones, and Georgie Fame.
