Christmas classics played by guitar virtuoso Joel Paterson! Season’s greetings to you all in Hi-Fi! I’ve been kicking around the idea of recording a Christmas guitar album for a while now. Every year I faced the same problem—I would get excited to play Christmas songs around the holidays, but couldn’t finish an album in time to release it before December. In 2016, I posted a series of guitar videos online counting down the days to Christmas. The response to them was overwhelming to me; it was great to know there was still a demand for classic Christmas music. So this summer I got motivated, locked myself in my music room to assemble some of my favorite seasonal songs, and started working on Hi-Fi Christmas Guitar.

Country / Traditional Country / Bakersfield Sound / Honky Tonk

Buck Owens turned Bakersfield, California into the epicenter of hip country music in the mid-'60s. All it took was a remarkable streak of number one singles that steam rolled right through Nashville with their electrified twang, forever changing the notion of what constituted country music and codifying the Bakersfield sound as hard-driving rhythms, trebly Telecasters, and lean arrangements suited for honky tonks, beer joints, and jukeboxes all across America. Half-a-century later, these remain sonic signifiers of Bakersfield, so the term no longer conveys a specific sound, place, and era, a situation the weighty Bear Family box The Bakersfield Sound: Country Music Capital of the West 1940-1974 intends to rectify.

Capricorn Records released this 2CD retrospective box set called The Swing Time Records Story. Subtitled R&B, Blues & Gospel 1946-1952, the box honors the music released by Jack Lauderdale, who ran Swing Time from Los Angeles, originally as the Down Beat label before changing the name to Swing Beat, before finally settling with Swing Time. The label lasted only six years but it would become the home for Ray Charles, Lowell Fulson, Percy Mayfield, and Jimmy Witherspoon. The box features 50 songs. This was a library disc so since there were stickers and handwriting on the booklet and disc, there are no scans for it, just the audio.
