"In C" is one of those contemporary works of which each listening differs from the previous one. Not because the interpretation is better or worse, but because the score is moving, according to the wishes of Terry Riley. We know, with "Stimmung", "In C is one of the two great works of the 60s, reacting against the excessive drift of contemporary music, serial type Terry Riley wanted to reappropriate modern and traditional music, in especially those coming from the East.

The award-winning Theatre of Early Music with Daniel Taylor and friends is back in this new recording of poignant funeral cantatas by Bach and Telemann. Death was a beloved theme for both composers, who understood its agony as a prelude to the soul’s joining with God and sought to justify its hour through their transcendent musical language.

Fête Galante, a 1999 release featuring soprano Karina Gauvin and pianist Marc-André Hamelin, won numerous awards, and the outstanding performances on this 2011 reissue confirm how well-deserved those honors were. Gauvin has an exceptional voice – clarion-bright, warm, confident, and agile, with a variegated palette of colors – and her effortlessly incisive interpretive skills give depth and life to everything she sings. The distinctiveness and character she brings to these songs show a terrific grasp of the genre of the mélodie, from the late 19th century songs by Fauré and the young Debussy to the mid-20th works by Poulenc, Honegger, and Émile Vuillermoz.
