This third volume of the complete orchestral works by the great French composer Maurice Ravel features his music for the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, his longest work, written for Sergei Diaghalev’s Ballets Russes. The company gave the first performance in 1912. Ravel depicted the characters in the story with great musical delicacy, and the Stuttgart Orchestra reflects this through the attention it gives to the score’s finest nuances. Ravel secures scintillating effects from the large percussion section that he uses, a clear nod to ancient music. The Valses nobles et sentimentales were composed at the same time as the ballet, which makes it an appropriate coupling. The version for piano, clearly linked to Franz Schubert’s similarly named waltzes, was published in 1911, with the orchestral version following one year later. Again the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra gives a thrilling, first class interpretation.

Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is 50 minutes of tragedy, despair, terror, and violence and three minutes of triumph. Premiered in 1953, the best performance is still that conducted by Mravinsky. Yevgeny Mravinsky's June 3, 1955, performance with the Leningrad Philharmonic of Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 is just as great. Mravinsky was the best Soviet conductor and his passionate precision and intense interpretations were as valid for Beethoven as they were for Shostakovich. His interpretations can be hard-driven and sharp-edged, but no one could object to the lucid strength and linear lyricism he brings to the work.

The Barbirolli Societys latest release is a 2-CD set of the complete concert given in the Free Trade Hall, Manchester on 20 October 1960, with the combined forces of the Hallé and BBC Northern Symphony Orchestras. The concert consisted of Nielsens Symphony No.5 and Mahlers Symphony No.7. Michael Kennedy, writing in 2000, stated: Performances of the (Mahler) Seventh were much rarer then than they are today, and Mahlerian scholars and enthusiasts flocked to Manchester for the event, among them Deryck Cooke who was profoundly impressed by Sir Johns ability to make the works structure cohere. This was an especially significant comment coming from Cooke, who harboured many doubts about the symphony and confessed to finding it most problematical.

Sibelius's Symphony No.3 was composed in 1907. It is the link between the romantic intensity of his first two symphonies and the more cold complexity of his later symphonies. Symphony No.7 was completed in 1924 and is notable for having only one movement. The Swan of Tuonela is a tone poem based on the Kalevala epic of Finnish mythology. The Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra and Yevgeny Mravinsky pair these with Debussy's Nocturnes Nos.1 & 2.

This recording features one of today’s most sought-after conductors, Vladimir Jurowski, who was appointed Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007, with many of his recordings on the LPO Label being chosen for special mentions by BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone Magazine. When Rachmaninoff finally settled in Switzerland in the early 1930s, it was here, in the tranquil surroundings he needed for inspiration, that he wrote the Third Symphony. Sir Henry Wood, writing in his autobiography My Life of Music (1938), predicted that Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony would ‘prove as popular as Tchaikovsky’s Fifth’. These arrangements of Rachmaninoff’s 10 Songs were made by Vladimir Jurowski’s grandfather, also called Vladimir (1915–72), whose first experience of Rachmaninoff’s music was in Russia after the Second World War. He orchestrated 10 songs specifically for the celebrated Russian tenor Ivan Kozlovsky, who recorded them with the conductor Kiril Kondrashin.

Ladies and gentlemen, scoot over, there is something fiery in the world of blues, bursting into flames, and sooner or later we’ll all be catching. But do not be fooled, JLH know their way around the field, from the drums to the vocals, it is all quality that only years of experience can provide. Not only does Jane Lee Hooker take on classics, they’ve been influenced by the greatest in Blues and with its debut album, the band flaunts it hitting all the right notes. A badass punk rock sound, with the smoothness of blues, the five member group has it all, bringing an old school vibe that is nothing but refreshing for the blues rock scene. These New Yorkers are making noise, and it will just get louder, hence the ! in No B! Jane Lee Hooker takes on classics like “Mannish Boy” by Muddy Waters, one of its biggest influences, while staying loyal to the original version. The group’s style is still palpable; just the same when it comes to her its take on traditional songs. “Wade in the Water” was given a killer guitar riff halfway through, and “Didn’t it Rain” has a very particular sound, the old and the new mixed and matched.

Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2012, Kevin Puts now stands in the forefront of contemporary American composers. His powerfully conceived Symphony No. 2 is a musical illustration of the events of 9/11 and traces a movement from unsuspecting bliss and rhapsody through violent upheaval to a reflective epilogue that contains both uncertainty and hope. Possibly inspired by thoughts of the Mississippi, River's Rush employs novel harmonies, while elegant transparency distinguishes the refined beauty of the Flute Concerto.
