Computational Statistics Second Edition

This Bayesian modeling book provides a self-contained entry to computational Bayesian statistics. Focusing on the most standard statistical models and backed up by real datasets and an all-inclusive R (CRAN) package called bayess, the book provides an operational methodology for conducting Bayesian inference, rather than focusing on its theoretical and philosophical justifications.

In the period since the first edition was published, I have appreciated the corre­ spondence from all parts of the world expressing thanks for the presentation of statistics from a user's perspective. It has been particularIy pleasing to have been invited to contribute to course restructuring and development based on the ap­ proach to learning and applying statistics that underlies this book.

Statistics is the activity of inferring results about a population given a sample. Historically, statistics books assume an underlying distribution to the data (typically, the normal distribution) and derive results under that assumption. Unfortunately, in real life, one cannot normally be sure of the underlying distribution.

This book shows the capabilities of Microsoft Excel in teaching physical science statistics effectively. Similar to the previously published Excel 2016 for Physical Sciences Statistics, this book is a step-by-step, exercise-driven guide for students and practitioners who need to master Excel to solve practical physical science problems. If understanding statistics isn’t the reader’s strongest suit, the reader is not mathematically inclined, or if the reader is new to computers or to Excel, this is the book to start off with.
