On top of an old warehouse in Hamburg, the architects of Beijings Birds Nest Stadium are building a dramatic new concert hall. It’s hoped the stunning design will make Hamburg famous throughout the world. But to attract the world’s best musicians, the concert hall must sound perfect, and getting the acoustics right is notoriously difficult. To add to the pressure, the building is years behind schedule, and millions of Euros over budget.

The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perform the 2023 New Year's Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. Franz Welser-Möst conducts the orchestra in the traditional feast of waltzes and polkas composed by the Strauss family and their contemporaries, culminating in the timeless By the Beautiful Blue Danube and Radetzky March.

Katie Derham introduces this year's traditional spectacular concert from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the gardens of Schonbrunn Palace. British conductor Daniel Harding makes his Summer Night Concert debut, and the concert includes a performance by Russian-German pianist Igor Levit. Broadcasting to over 80 countries worldwide, this year’s theme is ‘Fernweh’ meaning ‘Yearning for Distant Places’ and the concert features music by Bernstein, Verdi, Rachmaninov, Sibelius, Elgar, Debussy and Holst.

In 2019, the National Memorial Day Concert commemorates its 30th anniversary, bringing us together as one family of Americans to honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, military families and all those who have given their lives for our country.
