This recording brings back an obscure session from the long defunct Andex label that was probably recorded around 1956. The emphasis is on Latin jazz with altoist Art Pepper, trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins, pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Chuck Flores interacting with the percussion of Jack Costanza and Mike Pacheko. With arrangements by Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Benny Carter, and Pepper, the music is quite jazz-oriented if a touch lightweight. Worth investigating by fans of the idiom.

Rare recordings produced by Howard Rumsey with his incredible Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars and Charles Persip's Jazz Statesmen. You might get the impression from the cover photo that this is a cutting contest between Conte and Lee, but that's not the case. They only play together on two numbers on the album; and the rest of the tunes feature one of the two. That's not to say there isn't some great playing from each of them - there is. This is a first-rate, laid-back, west coast album which also includes some great blowing from Rosolino, Golson, and Cooper. Candoli and Morgan are each in great shape and neither sounds as if he is intimidated by the other, nor are they trying to one-up the other with pyrotechnics.

The Frank Capp Juggernaut's interpretations of 16 Neal Hefti compositions (which were originally written and arranged for the 1950s-era Count Basie Orchestra) bring new life to the highly appealing music without directly copying the earlier recordings. Capp and his 16-piece orchestra are in typically swinging form on obvious classics such as "Cute," "Whirlybird," and "Li'l Darlin'"; several songs whose ensembles are more familiar than their titles (such as "Flight of the Foo Birds," "Scoot," and "Bag-A-Bones"); and some high-quality obscurities.

Supersax is known for their miraculous renderings of Charlie Parker solos. They’re still flyin’ high with two ‘Bird’ pieces - his Blues For Alice once again denotes Parker’s mastery of the blues. And then there’s Parker’s Mood, a slow blues that contains one of Bird’s most venerated solos, beautifully reproduced by the five saxes. Here the group expands, taking on three compositions and solos from the bebop giant, pianist Bud Powell…
