Encyclopedia of Continuum Mechanics

Encyclopedia of Continuum Mechanics by Holm Altenbach
English | EPUB | 2020 | 2837 Pages | ISBN : 3662558777 | 341.38 MB

This Encyclopedia covers the entire science of continuum mechanics including the mechanics of materials and fluids. The encyclopedia comprises mathematical definitions for continuum mechanical modeling, fundamental physical concepts, mechanical modeling methodology, numerical approaches and many fundamental applications. The modelling and analytical techniques are powerful tools in mechanical civil and areospsace engineering, plus in related fields of plasticity, viscoelasticity and rheology. Tensor-based and reference-frame-independent, continuum mechanics has recently found applications in geophysics and materials.
Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis for Engineers: With Applications to Continuum Mechanics (Repost)

Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis for Engineers: With Applications to Continuum Mechanics by Mikhail Itskov
English | PDF(True) | 2015 | 299 Pages | ISBN : 3319374435 | 3.74 MB

This is the fourth and revised edition of a well-received book that aims at bridging the gap between the engineering course of tensor algebra on the one side and the mathematical course of classical linear algebra on the other side. In accordance with the contemporary way of scientific publications, a modern absolute tensor notation is preferred throughout. The book provides a comprehensible exposition of the fundamental mathematical concepts of tensor calculus and enriches the presented material with many illustrative examples. In addition, the book also includes advanced chapters dealing with recent developments in the theory of isotropic and anisotropic tensor functions and their applications to continuum mechanics. Hence, this monograph addresses graduate students as well as scientists working in this field. In each chapter numerous exercises are included, allowing for self-study and intense practice. Solutions to the exercises are also provided.

Fractals and Fractional Calculus in Continuum Mechanics

Fractals and Fractional Calculus in Continuum Mechanics by A. Carpinteri, F. Mainardi
English | PDF | 1997 | 352 Pages | ISBN : 321182913X | 33.9 MB

The book is characterized by the illustration of cases of fractal, self-similar and multi-scale structures taken from the mechanics of solid and porous materials, which have a technical interest. In addition, an accessible and self-consistent treatment of the mathematical technique of fractional calculus is provided, avoiding useless complications.

Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Conservation Laws

Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Conservation Laws by Sergei K. Godunov , Evgenii I. Romenskii
English | PDF | 2003 | 263 Pages | ISBN : 0306477351 | 17.9 MB

Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Conservation Laws presents a systematization of different models in mathematical physics, a study of the structure of conservation laws, thermodynamical identities, and connection with criteria for well-posedness of the corresponding mathematical problems.
The theory presented in this book stems from research carried out by the authors concerning the formulations of differential equations describing explosive deformations of metals. In such processes, elasticity equations are used in some zones, whereas hydrodynamics equations are stated in other zones. Plastic deformations appear in transition zones, which leads to residual stresses. The suggested model contains some relaxation terms which simulate these plastic deformations. Certain laws of thermodynamics are used in order to describe and study differential equations simulating the physical processes. This leads to the special formulation of differential equations using generalized thermodynamical potentials.

Continuum Mechanics Through the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries (Repost)

Continuum Mechanics Through the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries: Historical Perspectives from John Bernoulli (1727) to Ernst Hellinger (1914) by Gérard A. Maugin
English | PDF (True) | 2014 | 275 Pages | ISBN : 3319053736 | 4.7 MB

Conceived as a series of more or less autonomous essays, the present book critically exposes the initial developments of continuum thermo-mechanics in a post Newtonian period extending from the creative works of the Bernoullis to the First World war, i.e., roughly during first the “Age of reason” and next the “Birth of the modern world”. The emphasis is rightly placed on the original contributions from the “Continental” scientists (the Bernoulli family, Euler, d’Alembert, Lagrange, Cauchy, Piola, Duhamel, Neumann, Clebsch, Kirchhoff, Helmholtz, Saint-Venant, Boussinesq, the Cosserat brothers, Caratheodory) in competition with their British peers (Green, Kelvin, Stokes, Maxwell, Rayleigh, Love,..).

The motion of any body depends both on its characteristics and the forces acting on it. Although taking into account all possible properties makes the equations too complex to solve, sometimes it is possible to consider only the properties that have the greatest in?uence on the motion. Models of ideals bodies, which contain only the most relevant properties, can be studied using the tools of mathematical physics. Adding more properties into a model makes it more realistic, but it also makes the motion problem harder to solve. In order to highlight the above statements, let us ?rst suppose that a systemS ofN unconstrainedbodiesC ,i=1,. . . ,N,issu?cientlydescribed i by the model of N material points whenever the bodies have negligible dimensions with respect to the dimensions of the region containing the trajectories. ThismeansthatallthephysicalpropertiesofC thatin?uence i the motion are expressed by a positive number, themass m , whereas the i position of C with respect to a frame I is given by the position vector i r (t) versus time. To determine the functionsr (t), one has to integrate the i i following system of Newtonian equations: m¨ r =F ?f (r ,. . . ,r ,r ? ,. . . ,r ? ,t), i i i i 1 N 1 N i=1,
