A father and a son meet for a holiday on a beach. The father is 62 and a researcher of insect life, the son is 15 and at a boarding school. They don't have to say much to each other and both agree to „stop the experiment". But then they come across the inert body of a unconscious young woman. They carry her to their beach house.

Marta ha tredici anni e, dopo dieci anni passati con la famiglia in Svizzera, è tornata a vivere nel profondo sud italiano, a Reggio Calabria, la città dov'è nata. Marta è esile, attenta, con un'andatura un po' sbilenca e un'inquietudine che la fa assomigliare ad una creatura selvatica. Ma ha una grazia speciale, e mentre passa tra gli altri come una piccola fata guarda e sente tutto: non ricorda molto della sua infanzia a Reggio, la città è cresciuta senza nessun ordine, è per lei rumore, resti antichi accanto a palazzi ancora in costruzione e vento, un mare che si intravede vicino e sembra impossibile da raggiungere.
