This stupendous performance in Washington, broadcast by WWDC-FM, captures George Clinton's P-Funk extravaganza at the peak of its power and popularity, at the time of their classic Tales of Kidd Funkadelic and Hardcore Jollies albums. Boasting the talents of guitar prodigy Michael Hampton and bass legend Bootsy Collins, it's a breathless romp through many highlights from their huge catalog.

Rocky Mountain Shakedown was recorded on Parliament/Funkadelic's P. Funk Earth Tour on 2 November, 1976. Parliament had released The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein while Funkadelic released Hardcore Jollies, their first record for Warner Bros. Records. Songs from both albums are represented here. The live recording is professionally recorded and from the soundboard. This bootleg was released in 1992 on the Triangle label and easily measures up to, if not surpasses, the official Live: P-Funk Earth Tour album on Casablanca.

Funkadelic's major-label jump brought its version of life more into line with Parliament, though the crucial difference between the two – Funkadelic's guitars vs. Parliament's horns – remains intact. Eddie Hazel is missed, as always, but Gary Shider and Mike Hampton do fine work. Whoever peels off the concluding solo at the end of "Comin' Round the Mountain" deserves credit, even if it's sometimes flash for flash's sake. Similar exercises in feedback can be found on the title track and elsewhere, sometimes great, sometimes timekeeping.

With a much more stripped-down version of the band, if the credits are to be believed (five regular members total, not counting any vocalists), Funkadelic continued its way through life with Cosmic Slop. A slightly more scattershot album than the group's other early efforts, with generally short tracks (only two break the five-minute barrier) and some go-nowhere ballads, Cosmic Slop still has plenty to like about it, not least because of the monstrous title track.

It was released by Westbound Records in 2008 and consists of previously unreleased sessions recorded during the band's tenure for Westbound. The album was originally scheduled to be released in 2002, but was delayed numerous times, presumably due to legal issues. The CD also features a video clip of the song "Cosmic Slop", which can only be viewed on a PC.

Expanding back out to a more all-over-the-place lineup – about 15 or so people this time out – Funkadelic got a bit more back on track with Standing on the Verge. Admittedly, George Clinton repeats a trick from America Eats Its Young via another re-recording of an Osmium track, namely leadoff cut "Red Hot Mama."

' 2CD-Set includes all the group's hits from the Warner Bros. era (1976-1981) in unedited format. Because the band included live versions of "Cosmic Slop" and "Maggot Brain", you luckily get those pre-Warner Bros. classics here too.' Jason Birchmeier at AMG

The mastermind of the Parliament/Funkadelic collective during the 1970s, George Clinton broke up both bands by 1981 and began recording solo albums, occasionally performing live with his former bandmates as the P.Funk All-Stars. Born in Kannapolis, NC, on July 22, 1940, Clinton became interested in doo wop while living in New Jersey during the early '50s. He formed the Parliaments in 1955, based out of a barbershop back room where he straightened hair. The group had a small R&B hit during 1967, but Clinton began to mastermind the Parliaments' activities two years later.
