Cow Country

One Man and His Cow (original title: La Vache - The Cow) is a 2016 French comedy film directed by Mohamed Hamidi.
The Lebanese, Paris based trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf is a versatile musician who creates with charm and musical power wonderful solo albums like ‘Ullusions‘, ‘Wind‘ (music for the silent film ‘La Proie du Vent‘ 1926 by René Clair) and his three CD box ‘Dia‘. The use of electronics, solid jazz and trumpet section with four trumpets on ‘Illusions‘ makes him a pioneer who put the trumpet in a broader perspective.

This collection of long-lost gems from the latter days of the Stax empire highlights the Memphis soul label’s effort to branch out into country music. Although the majority of the tunes on this album never made it to the radio waves, the tracks here stand as a unique time capsule of early ‘70s country. Includes new liner notes by country biographer and Tony-award winning playwright Colin Escott.

Decca was a fairly wide-ranging label whose trademark sound was a strain of commercially palpable hillbilly pop perfected by producer (and, beginning in 1958, label head) Owen Bradley. These three discs offer an assortment of stars (Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn), subordinates, and the uncelebrated. The latter, in fact, are what makes this box stand out. A great deal of the fun comes from antiquated time pieces like Johnny Wright's "Hello Vietnam" ("I hope theworld will come to learn/That fires we don't put out will bigger burn") or that master of the hayseed soliloquy Red Sovine's "If Jesus Came to Your House" ("Would you have to change your clothes before you let him in?/Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they'd been?"). Overall, From The Vaults serves as an evocative sampler of what a rural jukebox was playing when Gunsmoke ruled the tube.
