The West of veteran TV writer/Deadwoodcreator David Milch is as grim as it is gritty, sprinkled with salty dialogue and punctuated by sudden brutality and raw sexuality. The original soundtrack cues by composer David Schwartz (represented here by his evocative show theme), Michael Brook and Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek play off that vision with often stark rootsiness. But it's the series' rich slate of songs – choices whose inventiveness often rivals that of The Sopranos – that consistently reinforce its all-too-human drama, if not the crusty veneer. This collection gathers the best songs from the series' first season, coloring the milieu with evocative hillbilly romps like Michael Hurley's "Hog of the Forsaken" and the a capella grace of Margaret's Native American "Creek Lullaby." But the collection's musical eclecticism stretches far beyond mere genre concerns, variously encompassing the nascent jazz of Jelly Roll Morton (a rollicking "Stars and Stripes Forever"), Delta blues of Bukka White and Mississippi John Hurt and even Gustavo Santaolalla's hypnotic Brazilian fretwork. But the collection's country and folk-tinged performances are its most resonant, whether invoking earthy traditions (the gospel fervor of the late June Carter Cash's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee's more heretical "God and Man") or more contemporary stylings like Lyle Lovett's "Old Friend" and the gentle "Twisted Little Man" by Michael J. Sheehy.

Vocalist Cook took a beeline from her native Detroit to Boston, where she received a degree in speech communications, then to N.Y.C. She's influenced by the gospel and Motown music of her home, as well as jazz. Using an expressive, wide-ranging, utterly clear voice, Cook is also unafraid to scat as she does on several of these selections, sometimes in between lyrics. She's a warm, soulful singer, easy to enjoy and well aware of her capabilities, of which show a nice diversity, and the maturity of a more seasoned professional. Cook's musical assets are greatly enhanced by the presence of pianist Cyrus Chestnut on eight of the 11 tracks. He truly can do it all, taking liberties with the song form on the Count Basie/Joe Williams evergreen "Corner Pocket," digging deep into soulful resources in tandem with percussionist Jeffrey Haynes.

From the backwoods brimstone labyrinth comes 'Hillbillies In Hell: The Rapture' - a blazing collection of psychedelic pedal-steel guitars, rapturous Gospel odes, She-Devils, possessed minors, hayseed barroom homicides, hallucinogenic nightmares and desperate souls. Originally waxed on microscopic labels and distributed in minuscule amounts, these troubled and forgotten troubadours sing of drug-fueled delusions, suicidal ideation, deathly rivers and Satan's perpetual torments. Years in the making 'Hillbillies In Hell: The Rapture' presents 34 testaments of benighted sinners, timeless tribulations, bottomless graves and the tall, tall flames of eternal damnation. A Luciferian cache of subterranean 45s - some of these sides are impossibly rare and are reissued here for the very first time. All for your primordial listening pleasure.

The American Song-Poem Anthology captures a fascinating, if unessential, moment in modern music making. Back in the '60s and '70s, ads in the back of magazines beckoned readers to submit their very own "song-poems," original ditties of often dubious quality. Hopeful songwriters were then given an offer they (thankfully) couldn't refuse: for a few hundred bucks, creative session musicians would do their best to use the public's lyrics and churn out an actual, honest-to-goodness recorded album that they could cherish forever. Some of the finest recorded results–not counting those still awaiting to be discovered in thrift store dime bins–can be found on this often surreal disc. Who can complain about the aptly-titled "Do You Know the Difference Between Big Wood and Brush"? Who can't relate to a song like "I Lost My Girl to An Argentinean Cowboy"? Well, lot's of people. But that's beside the point. It's hard not to love these songs–some patriotic, some romantic, most just plain bizarre–that enterprising young musicians did their best to spice up in any number of different genres (country, funk, disco, and, of course, rock). The songs made by Rodd Keith are particularly genius, but fans of novelty music will be hard-pressed to fault any of these 28 oddball cuts. –Jason Verlinde

Each of the three CDs in this box set are comprised of 16 songs devoted to a single theme: love, God, and murder, of course. And each of the three CDs is available separately should you not have a yen for one or two of the discs. Certainly there is a lot of notable music on this box, as it was personally chosen by Cash himself from recordings spanning the mid-'50s to the mid-'90s, mostly heavily weighting the 1955-70 period. There are a few well-known classics here that virtually anyone considering buying this will already know (and probably have), like "I Walk the Line," "I Still Miss Someone,

In the early weeks and months of the pandemic, confined to my Brooklyn apartment in the silenced city, I dreamed of wide-open spaces and the freedom to roam. I started researching “trail songs,” drawn to their lyrics about pale dawns, slumbering shadows, and other evocative imagery. What heaven, to saddle up a reliable horse and wander, unworried and unhurried, under a vast Western sky!
