Creative Demons

Les Démons de Tosca is a multidisciplinary project involving nine musicians, one comedian, one photographer and a sound-designer. It questions the notion of demon in the creative process. Using the libretto for Puccini's opera Tosca, each concert features a new combination of players from the ensemble. One of which happened at the Opus Jazz Club in the Budapest Music Center.When the proposal came from the BMC label produce a live CD of the trio's concert, it was quite clear to us, the three musicians, that this could only represent a small part, one instant, of the shape-shifting expressions of the Demons of Tosca.

The season has changed. Chris Jusell, Chaz Prymek, Matthew Sage, and Patrick Shiroishi continue forward with what follows 2020’s Fuubutsushi. Here, it is a new year, and it is time to shake the demons off and make a fresh start. Setsubun is the Winter chapter in the cycle (yes, Spring and Summer will come one day), but don’t conflate this “winter music” with the holidays; this is music for the stretch between January and the first peals of spring. The days in this chasm that may be getting longer, however slowly, but the nights are still long. The air is crisp. The natural world lays dormant, but the imagination flutters.

If you're seriously into power metal, there is more good news than bad news in the 21st century. The bad news is that power metal reached its commercial and creative peak back in the Ronald Reagan years. The good news is that thanks to the power metal revival movement (which has been dominated by Western Europe), a lot of decent power metal bands were formed in the '90s and 2000s – younger bands that rejected post-'80s developments in metal and remained faithful to the classic power metal sounds of the '70s and '80s.
