Financial Crises and Earnings Management Behavior: Arguments and Evidence Against Causality

Financial Crises and Earnings Management Behavior: Arguments and Evidence Against Causality By Bruno Maria Franceschetti
English | PDF | 2017 (2018 Edition) | 168 Pages | ISBN : 331954120X | 3.39 MB

This book approaches the question of the relation between financial crises and earnings management from two philosophical perspectives: positivism and critical realism. The results obtained using the positivist approach indicate that financial crises tend to have no consistent effect on earnings quality since managers’ earnings behavior does not differ from the pre-crisis to the crisis period. The author accordingly argues against the existence of a causal law based on a constant conjunction model (i.e., whenever a financial crisis happens, earnings management occurs) and concludes that financial crises cannot be seen as the cause of earnings management.

Mathematical Aspects of Paradoxes in Cosmology: Can Mathematics Explain the Contemporary Cosmological Crisis?

Mathematical Aspects of Paradoxes in Cosmology: Can Mathematics Explain the Contemporary Cosmological Crisis? by Michal Křížek , Lawrence Somer

This book provides a mathematical and numerical analysis of many problems which lead to paradoxes in contemporary cosmology, in particular, the existence of dark matter and dark energy. It is shown that these hypothetical quantities arise from excessive extrapolations of simple mathematical models to the whole physical universe. Written in a completely different style to most books on General Relativity and cosmology, the important results take the form of mathematical theorems with precise assumptions and statements. All theorems are followed by a corresponding proof, or an exact reference to the proof.

It was a transformation unprecedented in global history. In barely more than two centuries, the United States evolved from a sparsely settled handful of colonies whose very survival was in grave doubt into the most powerful nation the world has ever known-militarily, economically, technologically, culturally, politically, and even ideologically.
