Record dates made by American jazz musicians for the Japanese jazz market are often a bit different in their approach. These 2006 sessions, recorded by Ken Peplowski over two days with pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Gary Mazzaroppi, and drummer Jeff Brillinger, are unusual in that ten standards (all ballads) are featured, though with the leader playing one version on tenor sax, then immediately following it with another on clarinet. The players are capable enough in varying the approach to each tune with the different instrumentation, with Peplowski's smoky tenor and lyrical clarinet satisfying the listener each time. But one would bet that most listeners would rather have this two-CD set programmed with one disc devoted to each instrument, rather than hearing each song twice in a row…
Peerless saxophonist Harry Allen's new CD sees him navigate a course through thirteen charming songs, all which have "river" as their title. Joining his quartet on four tracks is cornettist, and fellow mainstreamer, Warren Vaché.
John Ford’s always been an optimist and his faith in the future shone through “Heavy Disguise” that the bass player set in the heart of STRAWBS’ “Grave New World.” The veteran’s new album taps into the same, although much more lyrical, vibe which follows the instrumental twang of 2014’s "No Talkin’" with an array of songs in search of a higher ground. So while there’s urban loneliness in “Concrete Jungle” bouncing off an acoustic guitars web and a sensual beat, Ford’s brisk appropriation of his former band’s “Deep In The Darkest Night” chases the gloom away.

Sounds of the Seventies was a 38-volume series issued by Time-Life during the late 1980s and early-to-mid 1990s, spotlighting pop music of the 1970s. Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "Sounds of the Seventies" series covered a specific time period, including individual years in some volumes, and different parts of the decade (for instance, the early 1970s) in others; in addition, some volumes covered specific trends, such as music popular on album-oriented rock stations on the FM band. Each volume was issued on either compact disc, cassette or (with volumes issued prior to 1991) vinyl record.
