Maurice Gendron's family was poor and his mother helped support them by playing cello in a local silent movie house. She would take him to the theater, where he had his first exposure to musical performance. He learned to read music when he was three, was given a violin at four, and took an instant dislike to it, but at five he was given a quarter-sized cello and it immediately appealed to him. His first teacher was Stephane Odero, who recognized that the boy had a notable talent and took him to the great cellist Emanuel Feuermann when Maurice was ten. He always remembered Feuermann's encouragement and kindness and held him as his idol.

Jan Antonín Losy was born around 1650 of a prosperous Bohemian family. After the death of his father, the first Count of Losinthal, he inherited not only his title but also considerable wealth. He was therefore able to devote his life to music, and his skill as a lutenist became famous throughout Europe. Unlike professional players, Losy had no need to sell or publish his music but fortunately it has survived in numerous manuscript copies. Today we have almost 200 pieces by Count Losy, many of which once belonged together in larger suites or partitas.

Today we have almost 200 pieces by Count Losy, many of which once belonged together in larger suites or partitas. As a composer, Losy followed the example of French masters such as François Dufaut, but to this he brought a gift for Italianate melody, particularly in the many surviving arias, rondeaux and minuets. For this amply filled tribute to Losy, Jakob Lindberg has selected 36 pieces, grouping them into six suites. He performs them on his 16th-century lute by the German builder Sixtus Rauwolf – an instrument which in 1715 was given a new neck and updated" into an 11-course lute, the most important type of lute during Losy’s lifetime.

The most renowned Canadian classical performer of the 20th century, pianist Glenn Gould remains one of the most fascinating and celebrated figures in all of music, the archetypal riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a conundrum. A former child prodigy, his piano artistry was unparalleled, yet he often received less recognition as a virtuoso than as a troubled eccentric; a disconnected recluse notorious for such odd habits as wearing a wool topcoat in the dog days of summer, Gould was a sight to behold even in live performances – seated on a low chair and slumped over the keyboard, humming (sometimes singing) audibly to himself as he played, all the while conducting with his free hand.

La Serenissima’s imposing standing in music history is reaffirmed again and again through the continuous presence of some of its greatest composers and musical works in concert and radio programs throughout the world. Inês d’Avena and Claudio Ribeiro wanted to have a different look at the repertoire, discover ‘new’ music, and perhaps add a small, new piece to the musical puzzle. In the autumn of 2018, they spent forty days in Venice exploring a number of musical archives. Among their new finds – six anonymous manuscript sonatas per flauto as well as for solo harpsichord, displaying the melodic freshness and rhythmic vivacity that is so appreciated in this repertoire – is also a newly discovered work by Vivaldi, all presented here as a world premiere. The exciting result of their research was recorded at a historic venue, the Sala della Musica dell’Ospedaletto in Venice.

Finland's Jean Sibelius is perhaps the most important composer associated with nationalism in music and one of the most influential in the development of the symphony and symphonic poem. Sibelius was born in southern Finland, the second of three children. His physician father left the family bankrupt, owing to his financial extravagance, a trait that, along with heavy drinking, he would pass on to Jean. Jean showed talent on the violin and at age nine composed his first work for it, Rain Drops. In 1885 Sibelius entered the University of Helsinki to study law, but after only a year found himself drawn back to music. He took up composition studies with Martin Wegelius and violin with Mitrofan Wasiliev, then Hermann Csillag. During this time …..
